It is actually that 2) makes more sense if one does care his life. It's not about terror, it's more about life caring like how you go across a road of possible traffic. Believing in no car will lead to your accidental death, it does no harm to look around before you decided to go across.
You are forgetting something obvious, which is that those in group number 2 don't come up with ideas "in faith" that they are going to live another life for themselves where they will die a second death for themselves. The truth is in the details.

Regardless, no one knows for sure anything, so those who believe in "faith" that there was no "before-life" are just saying that they are beings that began to exist and therefore can go back to nonexistence. And something does happen after death, life keeps moving on.
