Until the time of Augustine most Christians believed in the salvation of everyone.

Dr. Edwin Abbott, headmaster of the City of London School, wrote in his Cambridge Sermons -

QUOTE: "An argument was introduced by Augustine, and since his day incessantly repeated, that if aionios kolasis does not mean "endless punishment," then there is no security for the believer that aionios zoe means "endless life," and that he will enjoy the promise of endless happiness. But Matt. 25:46 shows the "eonian chastisement" and "eonian life" are of the same duration-lasting during the eons, and when the eons end, as Scripture states they will (1 Cor. 10:11; Heb. 9:26), the time called "eonian" is past and the life called "eonian" is finished, but life continues beyond the eons, as Paul teaches at 1 Cor. 15:26: "The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death." (which must refer to the lake of fire which is the second death, for the first death cannot be the last enemy). That is, the last, the final one in order. How will it be destroyed? First Corinthians 15:22 gives the answer: "For as IN ADAM ALL are dying, even so IN CHRIST ALL shall be made alive." Death is destroyed when ALL have been made alive, IN CHRIST."
-- Dr. Edwin Abbott

Note God’s wording
In Christ all shall be made alive
not
All who are in Christ shall be made alive

No, you follow the "great commission" because someone told you that was a path to salvation and burning in hell for all eternity scared the crap out of you so you BELIEVED what they told you without question--because they told you asking questions as a sign of WEAK FAITH and that would result in burning on hell for all eternity--

Have I got this right jimmie?
As I understand it the great commission is Matt:28:19 is it not?
Since none of the thousands of members of the Salvation Army (including lay members who attend SA meetings); and none of the thousands of members of the Brethren Assemblies -- none of these many thousands of people that you probably don't think are Christians because they don't obey the Great Commision -- is it really true that you believe they will all suffer in hell fire forever? (None of them believe in baptism)
Just curious

Why I believe that the Bible teaches universal salvation.
See the following great sixteen chapter introductory series to ultimate reconciliation. J. Preston Eby does a thorough job covering many aspects of the topic. Fundamental reading for any person interested in studying universal salvation from a solid biblical perspective.
Highly Recommended!

For anyone who may be interested, all of the arguments presented by ETers that universalism is not scriptural have been refuted in detail in this online book.
HOPE BEYOND HELL - GERRY BEAUCHEMIN (published 2007)
It can be downloaded free and read online here
Hope Beyond Hell – The Righteous Purpose of God's Judgment

I thank God for being able to see that believers in eternal torment will remain believers in eternal torment for as long as God wants them to.
God needs them as vessels of the grossest dishonor, a foil of contrast against which He will demonstrate the power of His love that never fails and His undefeatable grace.
But after the resurrection God will refashion all believers in eternal torment into vessels of honor because they were marred in the Potter's hands and they never leave His hands.

The doctrine of eternal torment is part of the black background against which God will paint His glorious masterpiece of universal transformation, using the paint brushes of His love that never fails, and His grace that cannot be defeated.
After believers in eternal torment have done their very best to convince others about what God will not do, God is going to do it anyway.

Believers in eternal torment will probably not want to have anything to do with this link, but others on this forum might.
Why not check it out?
Read the reviews first – just a suggestion.

By William Barclay (well known Bible expositor)
“I am a convinced universalist. I believe that in the end all men will be gathered into the love of God. The only victory love can enjoy is the day when its offer of love is answered by the return of love. The only possible final triumph is a universe loved by and in love with God.”

Sound like a ultra liberal ideas were the offence of the cross of Jesus and its judgement for salvation is gone and then we are left with a God who is ultra loving God who has all love and no justice, where God will live forever with people who probably hate him ....... I not convinced

yeah, why would we ever want to grow up, adulthood stinks. Holding oneself accountable and not judging others is a very hard thing to do.
