"Conversion" is also a great way for the mind to deal with survivor guilt.

We go around questioning why we lived, came so close to death when others all around us were dying--we are told it was gittb's will that we survived. That we survived to do a task that gittb has given us.

So we eventually gravitate towards the deity and embrace their forgiveness and accept the idea that we were spared for some future greatness..
