The second death is the death of the spirit. But we already know from Genesis and Luke 9:60 that the death of the spirit does not mean an end to its existence only that it is without life -- without those elements of life which makes existence worthwhile. It is not reasonable to make too much of this terminology, second death and lake of fire, and especially not to take it too literally for these phrases are only found in Revelation most of which is clearly not meant to be taken literally. Besides, outside of Revelation the descriptions closest to this speak of eternal torment.
