Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr. used to say that the most segregated hour in the country was on Sunday mornings at 11 a.m.
However, that all began to slowly change in 1952 when the Reverend Billy Graham made a decision to stop holding segregated crusades.
He faced an insurmountable amount of criticism for this decision, but with the guidance of King and other leaders such as Reverend Howard Jones - the first black evangelist - Graham changed the face of religion in America as we know it.

I agree... and maybe just as important ... is why?
Billy Graham spent most of his time talking about issues of salvation, and wasting very little time on who's "right" and who's "wrong". He was spreading the "good news", and let scripture do the convicting.
Feed my sheep... I believe that's how it's supposed to go.
Although I do not put my stock in any man... he is one I will always admire.
I disagree with you on Billy Graham. He did de-segregate, as you say, but he did not support MLK at least not until it became the thing to do. Please! New book called --Prince of War--you might want to check it out. You won't like it and can challenge it's contents. I don't want to start a debate on this. God is the judge but I can't sit by and just let this one go. Where did the politics and faith get so confused? Jesus NEVER played with the powers that be but he died for them.
I preferred Peter Marshall (the father not the son) . He gave Washington a shake up. Graham worked to scare. He scared me as a child but I loved how he held his Bible up. I am not a Baptist or just an American Christian.
It's unfortunate that people are taking pot shots at someone who has lived almost a century - most of it in the public eye.
I'm sure Mr. Graham made quite a few mistakes along the way - as we all do. He is not perfect. He is a human being.
We are all products of the society and of the time period in which we live. Much has changed in our society over the past 100 years.
As someone who grew up in the south during the era of JFK and MLK,... I can tell you that Mr. Graham was using his position to make a strong social and political statement - standing up forthe black community - when he chose to "desegregate" his crusades in 1952. (that was actually 3 years prior to the Montgomery Bus Boycott)
It's unfortunate that in today's world people don't want to give credit where it's due...

I call being a racist and a bigot more then a mistake, I call it a HUGE gaping character flaw.
If there was a Jesus Christ, I can't imagine he would have thought it OK to dislike someone based on the color of their skin or their religion.
He is unfortunately one of those people who beat their chest about being christian, who in reality doesn't truly reflect it in his behavior. He is a religious STAR, his preaching is more about attention to himself and being famous then bringing attention to a religion he SAYS he practices.
Do you guys really think its OK for a man like him to be so caught up in following the Pope like he does? Honestly, I find that rather ODD.

Graham doesn't need defending from you. Regardless of what you might say about him, he would only pray for you to get saved. Me too, for that matter.
