In other words, you are saying there is a contradiction.

You would have a point, if he actually wrote or spoke that.

Evidently, it comes by way of hearsay, but my question was - is there a contradiction?

now you have to re read the parable of the Father who gave his son a wedding..... the all the important invited guest didnt' show up at all .... so everyone including all was asked to come.. and few who showed up and some of those some didn't change into the wedding clothes that they were provided to them ......
aka it is burn on nearly everyone and every culture and reveals all of humanities greatest sins ..
even when he provides the wedding sacrifices , the right(eous)ness to go to the kings table and eat with him .. the dinner . and all the food and the clothes and just everything including the gifts. Yet few to no one is grateful or willing to thank him. Proving no people are really better or worse than any others , but the Jews just are more obvious about it. Mathew 22

Yes, Jesus was sent by His Father to witness to the 'post', as well as the 'lost' sheep of the house of Israel. If you would read a little more of the NT, you would learn that Jesus reached out to the Jew first, and then the Gentile. He and His apostles witnessed and converted many Jews and Gentiles, both in Jewish and Gentile lands.
