It should be fairly obvious from the scripture citation that this particular use of "the world" is talking about those things that would constitute selfish desires. That's the trouble with vague expressions.
It appears you weren't vague, even Mr. Jarber used your post under his to support what he said.
1 John 2
15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
Not the world, as in "people of the world". The world in this context = the ways of the world (sins), and adultery is given as an example.

Jesus was no friend of the world. Jesus died for a world that hated Him that through His blood sacrifice they might turn from the world and into His loving arms. It's a pretty amazing act of love. If His love won't turn someone from their sins, then God only has dreadful judgment left to serve.
Isnt it curious though how at least in most parts of the US, catholic and christian churches are very well respected by the communities they are in, even by the most secular crowds, 'churches and church going people' are very well respected and liked in my city and most of state too.
One of the largest catholic parishes in my area, they have a very good relationship with the secular city where they are located, city council members, the mayor, police depts, etc, they all get along with and respect this church and its members (and nearly every other church in the area too for that matter)
I tend to think if these churches were really teaching the faith and following Gods law as he intended, cities, states, secular communities, etc would absolutely despise them and want nothing to do with them.
John 7:7
The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil.
Where do you stand?
Can you quote one verse of scripture where Jesus said "hey you , you'll hate me for saing this to you you sinner, the way you are living is evil and God isn't too pleased with you".
Guess what though, the fundies of his day thought they'd have a go at him, Jesus was lke "bring it on", they got the full wrath of God by the words that proceeded out of the mouth Jesus and they lieft with sore arses and their tales between their legs.
