I live in what most people would consider the boonies. The nearest town is about 20 miles away and has a population of 3500 and change. I've never seen a panhandler here - in that town or in area villages. However, there are an abundance of poor people living out here on the borders of civilization but the community takes care of its own - with a little help from our socialist government.

There are regular food drives for the local Community Cupboard, nobody much cares which church or local organization is sponsoring the latest one.

But I've lived in larger towns and small cities earlier along my life's way and have come across panhandlers now and then. I tried to make eye contact first and then decide whether to give a dollar or two, or ask him/her if they'd like a sandwich and something to drink.

Even if they are scammers, they are not nearly as criminal as the bourgeoise class of desk workers who make their livings on the backs of the working poor. We live in a slavery system, and it doesn't matter what type of job you have (if it's not manual labor). Your job is no less a scam than the phony panhandler.

Living on the minimum wage of $7.25 per hour, and trying to support your family is impossible without help. I would rather give to the mother needing formula until she gets paid, than tithing
