(Hope this is the right forum)

Is it appropriate to send such a card which features one religion to a family of another, e.g., sending a Catholic Mass card to a Mormon family? Or would it be more appropriate to send a general, non-denominational sympathy card?

I would go with option No. 2; however, I received a couple of Catholic mass cards when my brother died, and I am not Catholic and neither was he. I appreciated them.

Agree with MQ, generic sympathy risks no insult.

Keep it general... maybe write in a brief reference to God if you know they are religious.

May God comfort you during this time...

How well do you know the person? If it's something you've talked about, I'd send one. Otherwise, keep it general.

I don't send religious cards, rather I call, write or do something from the heart.

Why not be a mensch and send one that is a reflection of THEIR religious beliefs and not yours?...

OPTION 2, DEFINITELY.

Most religious sympathy cards I've ever see usually simply say "May God comfort you at this difficult time" with no distinction about which religion anyone is.

You could always get a card that says something like: "Just wanted to let you know I'm thinking of you. Sorry about your loss." Nobody is going to be offended by that.

That's my usual. I get the very simple, "My thoughts are with you" or sometimes "May memories of your loved one comfort you" types.

If it's someone I know well, I buy blank cards and write my own message.
