Ta da..A rare thing for blue...Copy and paste snippet from a very long boring article

Many different theories of the meaning and symbolism of the gifts have been advanced, since while gold is fairly obviously explained, frankincense, and particularly myrrh, are much more obscure. They generally break down into two groups:
  • That they are all ordinary gifts for a king — myrrh being commonly used as an anointing oil, frankincense as a perfume, and gold as a valuable.
  • That they are prophetic — gold as a symbol of kingship on earth, frankincense (an incense) as a symbol of priestship, and myrrh (an embalming oil) as a symbol of death. Sometimes this is described more generally as gold symbolizing virtue, frankincense symbolizing prayer, and myrrh symbolizing suffering.
There you have it..straight from my clipboard

Default Gold,Frankincense, Myrhh

Since Jesus came to teach us to SERVE one another, not dominate or power over or be better than each other, here is the best meaning of the gifts I have found:

Gold (typical gift for a king): kingship

Frankincense (used to worship God and anoint, not just by priests): God incarnate

Myrrh (used to bury people): foretelling His death

Not that it's salient to the thread, but where does it say there were 3 magi/kings/wizards/sages? There were 3 gifts, but how many sages?

And can give Jesus the same gift today, gold of a pure heart, frankincense of a dedicated life, and myrrh of death to the old life and total surrender to Him.

I agree with the descriptions provided for the three gifts presented to the Christ child.

It's an interesting point. Truthfully, we don't know how many magi visited Christ and presented these three specifically mentioned gifts. It is an assumption that there were 3 -- one per gift. However, there could have been no less than 2 (because the word is pluralized) but any number more than three. I think the importance isn't how many magi came to worship Christ, but that they did and what they brought were indicitive of his life.
