Orthodox Jews Burn New Testaments Given by Christian Missionaries in Israel

JERUSALEM — Orthodox Jews have burned hundreds of New Testaments in the latest act of violence against Christian missionaries in Israel.

Uzi Aharon, the deputy mayor of the central Israeli town of Or Yehuda, says he got into a loudspeaker car last Thursday and urged people to turn over hundreds of New Testaments and missionary material recently distributed by missionaries.

The books were dumped into a pile and religious students set them afire in a lot near a synagogue, he said.

The Maariv newspaper reported Tuesday that hundreds of students took part in the book-burning.

But Aharon told The AP on Tuesday that only a few students were present and he was not there when the books were torched. Hundreds of New Testaments were burned, he said.

Proselytizing is frowned upon in Israel but is not illegal in most cases.

I'm not a fan of burning any book, but I don't see how this can be considered an act of violence.

How is burning the New Testament an act of violence against Christians? Now, if they had thrown the Christian missionaries on the bonfire too.......

Still, what missionaries have to realize is that not everybody believes what they are selling. To an orthodox Jew, it is no sin to burn the new testament. Rude, maybe --- but no more a sin then if a Christian burnt a Harry Potter book.

It's because the Bible is a Holy Book. To the Christian, it's like burning the American flag. Look at the trouble the military personnel got in for using the Koran for target practice.

its a holy book if you are christian.im sure there are churches in this country that would gleefully burn all the korans or books of morman they could get their hands on if someone donated them by the case.its unfortunate that some cannot tolerate the beliefs of others.they should have just donated them to someone who would be interested rather than giving ammunition to those who already fan the flames of anti-semitism

Understand this was more political than religious or intolerance. I don't condone their actions, but the actual reason behind Orthodox groups doing this is that their utmost goal is maintaining Israel as a Jewish Majority state. It's a statement by once certain group (not all Orthodox or Jews or Israelis) to keep other religions out of Israel. Please realize that the vast majority of Israelis and Jews are not represented thus.
