I agree.
You can have your roots so deep, but if they aren't watered and get the needed nourishment, your roots will dry up and die.
It seems to be an exhortation for Christian fellowship, reading the Word, discipleship, and anything else that moves us from baby Christians to mature Christians.
I believe that it means that the word may or may not bear fruit in our lives according to how it is received or if it is received. It will have no effect, have a limited affect, or have a wonderful effect and bring about change according to how we interact with it in this life, depending on the condition of our hearts. We hear with our ears, but there is a deeper kind of listening with the mind and heart that is necessary to gain spiritual understanding from Jesus' words.
Some people do not understand God's truth because they are not ready for it. I think God reveals His truth to people who will act on it.

When Jesus had the attention of His audience and the people were anxious to hear, Jesus spoke plainly. But, when His audience contained people who looked down on him or dispised him, (like the pharisees and saducees) He used parables that were lost on the them, they had no idea what he was talking about.
