You had to know this thread would be coming...it is the fall now, and pumpkins are everywhere. I'm curious to know how others in this forum feel about trick-or-treating and dressing up in costumes. Would you go to an adult Halloween party, or allow your kids to attend?
Every year I'm torn on trick-or-treating because of all the gruesome costumes out there. My kids get completely freaked out and have nightmares, and quite honestly I don't want to see that kind of stuff either. We've done the church party and that's fun, but the kids are moving past that and aren't interested anymore.
Do you stay home, and give out candy? Or keep the lights off? And, if you do trick-or-treat...how long does the candy stay around your home? When the kids do go out, I usually have to throw the candy out by mid-November because of all the holiday treats to come.
Halloween was sure a lot tamer when I was a kid, but hey, that was a few years ago I got to go trick or treating back then and loved it, no one ever even thought of it being anything but fun. I pass out candy to the neighbor kids now, but when the teenagers start to come, I turn the lights out. Of course I stock up on the 1'2 price candy the next day! And I would go to the Halloween party if I can get my hair and nails done
Hard to know what to do. When my kids were smaller we only went to people's homes where we knew them.
When we were young we didnt' worry as much. You just don't know if there is a nut out there or not. My inlaws have a big party but it's a fun time and we know it is safe. I actually turn my light out. I figure the denist has enough business....
I think for non-christians it's just fine. For christians I would say:

I think we should let children be children and understand that our God is bigger than any evil. Let them have some fun and just don't dress them up in witches...then go out with your kids and enjoy the time together. It doesn't take very long for a empty nest
I love Trick or Treat night, but I also love kids.. I would never turn out my lights and hide behind the curtain from a sweet little girl all dressed up like Cinderella with her proud parents snapping her picture as she knocks on my door and says in the sweetest, happiest voice "Tick or teet"..I even act scared by her little "Ghost" of a brother, who giggles, because he knows I am not really scared

Ah, and June would expect absolutely nothing less from her coon sister of distincition! Or, you could consider this: Go to a Halloween party dressed up as June: Hair just combed, no hair spray, not perfectly coifed, no nail polish, and not even recently filed! That would no doubt frighten the masses right there!

June can't honestly remember whether this is her second or third year on this forum where every year the "issue" comes up. (Silly June. You would think she'd have noticed her start date...) Anyway, June just doesn't get it. We're talking a holiday where kids dress up, go trick or treating, and it's not demonic, evil, or otherwise harmful. (Unless one gets one's house pounded with eggs, which admittedly, isn't nice, and a royal pain.)
June says take the little tykes trick or treating, Hoosier. June bets it would take you back to your (pre-coon) days of childhood, and you might actually enjoy the more fond memories of having been a kid on Halloween. June is just guessing on this part, granted, but there is something to be said about showing kids that there is a truly benign aspect to Halloween. That it can be fun without being "evil." (She also somehow thinks that that's not gunna come across/be accepted well around here, but you know June...)
June loves Halloween. --But she knows you already knew that. But she also suspects that this is not just about scarey costumes, either...
We celebrate harvest festival at our town center, there are some weird costumes but each year they seem to get less and less. Lots of games and music... the kids like it.
Being that Halloween has satanic origins I'll pass. We are not called to be like the world or to try to substitute things of the world so we can make ourselves/our kids feel good.
I didn't always feel this way though. I used to think it was ok if you didn't dress up in a scary costume. But God has opened my eyes. If you really want to know if you should celebrate it or not, pray that God will let you know and then research the history of the "holiday" and what goes on today during the holiday that's more than "trick or treat". If you still think its okay after that then God be with you.
