No offense Celtic Lady. I am sure you are a very nice person BUT if you don't quote scripture in your explanation of who and what God is then everything you say, is irrelevant.

I am not trying to be rude. but this is "solas scriptura" Studying scripture using only scripture, anything else is irresponsible and dangerous.

This is NOT legalism- Please use the term correctly- Legalism emphasizing a system of rules and regulations, in achieving both salvation and spiritual growth. No one is doing that. I am not explaining salvation but that we are broken people, born in sin from Adam, disgusting and wretched site in front of our God because He is so holy, righteous and hates sin. I am using scripture to explain who and what God is where as you are making things up using NO scripture.

"catch more flies with honey"???? Well I don't do it man's way. I do it the way the bible tells me. Paul said, "The message of the Cross is foolishness for those who are perishing" preaching about love, love, love. Jesus loves you, why don't you try on Jesus, Jesus died for your sins. Makes no sense to the unbeliever.
Either I am truly poor at getting my thoughts across in an understandable manner, or, you really are missing the point I've been trying to make. So, I will try one more time to see if I can get this right.

Christians can be forthright and speak the truth, without being rigid, harsh, judgemental, and Puritanical in our approach. Let us call it a balanced approach. Jesus did it all the time, setting the example. It is not necessary to accost people with harsh language, telling them that they are disgusting, vile, wretched, and hell-bound. Treating people in such a harsh, unloving way will drive more people away from Jesus, than it will to bring them to him. And, for many of those who do come, it is entirely fear-driven. I am not convinced that that is what Jesus had in mind.

If, in your opinion, I used the term "legalism" wrongly, then I would have to say that I believe that you are wrongly using First Corinthians 1:18. The preaching of the cross is foolishness to those who merely don't understand. The verse does not say, or even hint, that preaching love is foolishness. Preaching about the love of Jesus is exactly what Christians are supposed to be doing. Yes, Christians are supposed to tell people that Jesus died for their sins. But, there is a way to do it, and a way not to do it. Christians can be firm and truthful, and yet still be loving in their approach. If the only way a Christian can tell someone about Jesus is to rant on about how disgusting and wretched they are, they are wasting their time.

You want me to explain who and what God is, using scripture? First John 4:8 - "He that loveth not knoweth not God, for God is love". Coupled with the description of love, as given by Paul, (which I've already said was excellent, and obviously inspired of God), I believe that is about as good a description as we will ever have.

By the way, I never said I didn't appreciate Paul's writings, as such, (otherwise, I certainly wouldn't have quoted the Love Chapter). I did say that I don't believe that every word from his pen came from God. He himself, said as much, when he talked about his opinion of marriage. It was clearly his thought, not a commandment from God, as he attested. I believe Paul was, too frequently, much too harsh, and I don't have much appreciation, or patience for that sort of thing, (having been on the receiving end of that kind of "Christian" attitude). Clearly, you have a better opinion of him, which is fine, but I am certainly entitled to my own opinion, as well.

Great post shanna!

I would agree that the hell of torture is not the sheol and hades of the bible. i love that passage in Isa 45 did you notice what everyone who knee would bow whose tongue would confess would be confessing? That in Him they have righteousness and strength.

Isa 45:23-24I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear. (24) Surely, shall one say, in the LORD have I righteousness and strength: even to him shall men come; and all that are incensed against him shall be ashamed.

One shall say who is that one?

Scripture is clear

Eph 1:6-10 To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved. (7) In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace; (8) Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence; (9) Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself: (10) That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him:
Thanks, Patrick The verse in Isaiah is a very powerful one to me that speaks of the hope that all will have in the Savior. Amen, only in Him will they have righteousness and strength. He will reign triumphant in every heart. Thanks for sharing and God bless!

Where do you get the idea that God punishes small children? Teenagers, yeah, but not children. People have the option to go to hell or accept God's forgiveness. We all deserve hell, but fortunately God provided a way out (Jesus Christ). Unfortunately, most of mankind love their sin and pride too much to accept God's forgiveness.

NEIL TURAN:

What About Hell?
" E.I.T.A.I.A.S.

"To be simple, after all, only two things are important:
1. Heaven
2. Hell

"Three sort of spirits will enter them

1. God
2. Angels
3. Men

"For God it is simple, he is always in Heaven, but why? You know, God doesn´t have to do any good work, but yet he is always in heaven, why is this?

"Further, God created the Angels in Heaven, but some rebelled against him, they are now know as demons with their faither the Devil/Satan. Why didnt God forgive them, as he had forgiven Mankind?

"Further, God also created mankind in Paradise, but we sinned against God, but why must all men/or many men Go to hell, isnt that horrible, is God still just, if he punishes us all or many of us in Hell, a terriyfing idea, dont you think, is horrible, what do you think, is God Holy and Good if he punishes many men in hell, even small children! Oh horrible fact"

----------------------------------------

(I couldn't get this software to quote the above, so I did as good as I knew how to quote the original post!)

The initial post in this thread is an example of "Cartoon Christianity." It is the popular version of what has been handed down from other men who purified what they received from the people before them. Finally we received these traditions of men, partial truths we were not yet equipped to judge when we were beginning our walk with God. Those of us who continued to consult the primary documents, the Holy Scriptures in Hebrew and Greek, have found quite a different picture. Of course, the use of Scripture by the Holy Spirit to minister the presence of God to us is foremost; but, we are meant to understand and come out of Babylon.

(I mean to read all the posts but haven't finished yet. So, I hope this observation isn't a disruption.)

I agree. To be led by the Spirit into truth (and Who is truth?) is key.

The variable is the reader, unfortunately. The image we have of the Almighty dictates what we filter from Scripture. I have seen how God can strip everything we've believed in order to rebuild in total confidence in Him.

Evangelical Christians are divided in their opinion about what the Bible teaches about the fate of children who die.

Evangelicals don't hold the key to truth - He does.
