You're supposed to use other verses in the bible not what Joe the Plumber might think.

How very true ! My sentiments exactly.!

The problem is that each one of us has our own opinions and beliefs and we each interpret scriptures differently. The problem is that we ARE in a way debating Lutheran and Calvin because each one of us was influenced by whatever particular denomination we were brought up in, and even if we have changed denominations, we are still influenced by both the denom we left and the denom we moved to, so saying that the Bible interprets itself is ridiculous.

They have the bible in different languages, and different versions.

I, too, use BibleGateway.com at times for reference, however, I notice (or at least am having trouble finding) that they do not have a version of the Catholic Bible for reference. BibleGateway seems to be sort a few books for reference.

I agree, doctrines have been built on 2000 years of theologians interpreting and reading between the lines and building religious practices and morality around their perception using the bible to support them. I am not saying all doctrines and traditions are not ok, but it is ok to question doctrines and traditions. It is not ok to go against the greatest commandment - love God with your whole heart ........ and love your neighbour as yourself. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God loving God includes listening to HIS Spirit - Gods spirit is not separate from him.

You are confused that people read between the lines and interpret scripture to suit their own needs?

or

You are confused that people take scripture out of context and interpret it to suit their own needs?

or

You are confused that the Bible does not define the word Sacrament, neither does it proscribe HOW one is to be "born again" (in blue taken from grannynancy)?

Or are you confused that grannynancy and I agree?

This is the title of this thread:

Not all Christians are going to Heaven

Taking it back to the OP, I am curious for all of you who practice Sola Scriptura and those who are so quick to translate the Bible for the rest of us...when did John 3:16 not become enough?

And just so that we are clear on the verse, I went to BibleGateway.

BibleGateway.com - Passage*Lookup: John 3:16

John 3:16 (New International Version)

16"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,[a] that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
