Palm Beach Post - News from The Associated Press (http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/F/FL_PORN_BURN_FLOL-?SITE=FLPAP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&CTIME=20 08-10-20-09-50-59 - broken link)

Ok.. this is a short story but it is JAM PACKED with fun!

1. Church buys theatre (should churches spending $1.4M on theatres?) Aren't there some poor folks in Jacksonville that could use some food?

2. Upon closing on the deal they find reels of porn stashed away (100 reels! What kind of theatre was this?!?)

3. They have a "holy hose down" and burn the porn. (Publicity stunt? Why not just get rid of it privately? Why make a big deal about it?

4. The "holy hose down" performed from a Jacksonville Fire & Rescue truck blessed by a priest.. (are we to be using public assets to be blessed for religoius publicity events?)

Question: How would you have liked for your church to have handled the situation? Would you have wanted them to buy a theatre? If so and they found porn would you have wanted it on the news?

This place is located on the west side of Jacksonville on 103rd and Blanding and was a flea market and I believe ran movies at night in the 90's and till its closing. I am surprised that that the Baptist church condoned this back in the 70''s and 80's as they are influential in Jacksonville in shutting down these types of places showing porn.

I think this could have been done quietly without bringing it to the forefront, just have a few members dispose of the reels of tapes and be done with it.It might been a ploy to draw in more members by drawing attention to themselves or the pastor himself on the news and other media. This is a blue-collar sketchy area of town, somewhat poor but low-key type of people so this type of ploy is definitely an aberration for that side of town.

I wouldn't mind my church buying up a theatre if they were expanding as a church and needed more property to build a new one and if they found porn tapes, just dispose of them secretly without drawing attention to ourselves,a church grows by faith through God not by media coverage

I don't understand, nor do I know the reason for buying the old theater, but I agree with Bigt and wonder if the big bucks could have been more beneficially spent on more worthwhile needs, like hunger, homelessness, prescriptions for those folks who can't afford to have them filled, etc, etc..
Personally I think their "holy hosedown" was nothing more than a public display of their boastfullness about their own selfrighteousness..Why not just quietly rid the world of the trash, without drawing a crowd to promote yourselves?

I don't really understand what the issue is on this story.

It's an old drive in so I would assume the bulk of the 'theater' is in raw land real estate. Mostly open space. How many folks could you feed on 13 acres? At 2 units per acre, maybe 26 habitat for humanity homes? Or a shelter for homeless folks? A drug and alcohol rehab center?

We just don't know their intent or what the Lord may be asking them to do.

As far as burning the porn, why not make it an event? Let's the community know your standards, what you believe, what you are against? Didn't Elijah call down fire from God? Weren't there multiple directives in scripture to 'Tear down the Asherah poles?' And another POV, what if you were someone who knew the porn was there and were outside the church. I can see a post here now "I used to work at that theater and there were tons of porn there. Never heard about it, did ya? Bet the ole preacher's in there watching it right now!"

Kinda a damned if ya do, damned if ya don't kinda thing.

As Christians, I wish we wouldn't judge the actions and undertakings of our brothers and sisters in Christ unless we're quite sure it isn't what the Lord was leading them to do.

I'm also not sure, as Christians, why we'd have a problem with the fire truck in this case.
