As a Christian I feel compassion for prostitutes, Some end up in it by there boyfriends leading them into it. I have seen it happen, The girl believing she is helping her boyfriend out of a situation, because she is so blindly in love with him, then before she knows it she is hooking up with men giving the boyfriend the money. Some out of desperation no family friends no help, need money and very hungry. You will never know the compromises you are capable of doing till you hit rock bottom, you have children to feed. you have rent to make and no prospect of a job.

I can't imagine anyone, anywhere, at any time who would "choose" prostitution for a career. I don't care what their religious beliefs may be. For a woman or girl or man or boy to prostitute themselves sexually it can only come from sheer desperation...be it drugs, alcohol, poverty, fear...there is no other reason that would even begin to explain that horrible lifestyle. The bad-guys in this world of prostitution are the pimps, the johns and the dealers who use these women to make money...the women (and men and girls and boys) who are sucked into that world are not to be condemned. Only a life of desperation and pain could ever result in that choice of "work".

Aside from my religious views, I find prostitution reprehensible. There are those that say legal prostitution would deter some rapes from occurring but I find this argument naive because rape isnt about sex, or lustful desire, its about power or imposing your will over another human being or sometimes just straight violence.

As far as the whys of how could someone get into being a prostitute--the answer varies, could be because of drugs, they were sexually abused as a child, feeding their children, etc.

Now, whose worse--the prostitute or the john?? IMO they are equal--one is using themselves for financial gain and the other is using another human being for gratification

I know this post has been around for quite a while, but I came across it while doing some searching and feel the need to reply:

Prostitution is complicated. Low self esteem and history of abuse are only a few factors. Often times women find themselves trapped, sold as a "sex slave" and underneath a very ugly and dangerous group of pimps. Depending on which country we're talking about (in America, prostitution tends to be a little, though not much, friendlier) some prostitutes were sold into brothels at young children and then starved and beaten until they performed the requested "tasks". Obviously this leaves them little hope or choice. Older women, particularly in other countries, who face poverty, starvation, and physical demise can turn to a lucrative prostitution industry and soon find themselves trapped with debts that prevent them from escaping. Child sex trafficking in the US isn't uncommon (especially among teens living on the streets), and it's also not uncommon for pimps to disguise themselves as others' salvation, promising foreigners passage to America with a great job, only to lock them into a brothel and force them to work as a slave. Not all prostitutes are trapped or forced into it - lifestyle, friend choices, childhood history, abuse...all these things play into a woman's choice to go down that road.

On Christianity...sexual immorality is a sin, along with a host of many others listed in the Bible, all of which can be forgiven if a person chooses to believe in Jesus (that He, being God, took the punishment for their sins when He died on the cross). God has always been full of compassion towards the weak and the helpless, and Jesus many times was surrounded by prostitutes and other "sinners" that chose to follow Him and believe (turning away from their old life). I think very few things rend the heart of God more than a child being sold as a sex slave to some man full of evil intent, or a little girl who is abused by the one she was supposed to be able to trust. But God gives us free will...to sin and to turn away from sin and put our faith in Him to forgive our mistakes....however big or small they may be.

AND - to reply to an earlier post, I cannot call the prostitute and the "john" equal. One is imprisoned, often times, the other willingly seeks it out...and sometimes with children who were sold as slaves apart from their own choice. I don't mean to upset anyone, but I can't call that equal...sorry. Before you condemn a prostitute (if you're a Christian), you might want to read about how Jesus treated them
He always received them, welcomed them, loved them, and defended them (check out the story about the woman caught in adultery). The Pharisees condemned. Jesus didn't.

Hope this helps answer your question.
