Barak Obama is closing GITMO and many people are happy. I heard a minister on TV say that a Christian nation such as the United States should not engage in such actions because it is biblically wrong for our government to do so.
I don't like torture but I am yet to see anything in the bible condemning a government's use of torture?
It's probably implied by the "do unto others, as ye would have them do unto you." Whether it's done by the government or a neighborhood or the individual, the proper course of action is clear. If you don't want to be hurt by others, don't hurt them.
The person that reads the Bible is the one that understands that he or she is the one to set the example.
Thank you for the link but I do not consider "Christianity Today" a viable true Christian biblical source shown by their uncanny ability to use secular sources. Most of the verses (the few that they gave) were interesting but pulled out of context. They were literally stretching verses to prove a government's use of torture being wrong.
I particularly liked "5. Torture erodes the character of the nation that tortures."

OK I read the first page and a half of the article. I realize they want to designate anything that makes someone uncomfortable as torture. They really need to look at what our own government does to our soldiers during their training. I was in BUD/S and some of the things they did to us was much worse that what they are doing to the detainees and enemy combatants in order to prepare us for those other countries who like to criticize our techniques while using worse.
We could stop all aspects of interigation and the enemy would still torture our soldiers. Look at what happened to John McCain and that woman, I forget her name, who the Seals rescued at the beginning of the war. She was raped, beaten, hung upside down with two broken legs naked and used as a punching bag.
Do unto others as you would have them do unto you does not work in war, if that was the case then there would be no more wars because the Christian nations or those who believe in the Bible would be wiped out.

In BUD/S can you walk away? Is it your right? If you refused to do what they asked what happened to you? In another post you mentioned that women couldn't hack it. Were they forced to go through with BUD/S?
See thats the difference. You could have walked away. Those being tortured can't.

It may not work in war but we aren't debating "do unto others as they would have them do unto you".
