As regards the facet of God's character being righteous judge ... having re-read my post, I did not word what I wanted to express properly. I made it sound like God's mercy and longsuffering are limited, which I don't believe they are.

That being said, the characteristics of God are all encompassing. It's not one or the other, but all of them, equally and for all time. God is unchanging. That is one of his characteristics as well.

What I meant to put across in my post regarding God being a judge is that yes, he will judge everyone and this judgement will be made by Him in accordance with who He is. It is written:

Quote:
Hebrews 9:27 (NIV) Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment,...
There have been many who simply focus on the positive characteristics of God... good, loving, kind, etc., etc. I was attempting to point out that the fact God is also a judge is glossed over or not discussed. Because no one wants to be judged ... even as that judge will be utilizing all aspects of his character when he does so.

As to whether that judgement becomes eternal separation or complete reconciliation is a topic for another thread. I was simply pointing out that the aspect of God as judge is overlooked or played down, even though this should not be done. It is one aspect of Almighty God, in conjuction with many other aspects, that one has to come to terms with. At the end of it all, whether one believes in eternal separation or universalism is a personal decision and not something I wanted debated in this thread.

I think I've clarified the debate that is welcome here, the understanding that God's judgement will not be devoid of the rest of his character or go against what he has declared to us in His word, because God also does not contradict himself. Exactly what that judgement will be, what form it will take, would only be speculation by any party, no matter how well backed up they feel they are... including myself. Universalists are settled and comfortable with what they believe and I am settled and comfortable with what I believe. We may not agree. We may feel the other is diluted or misguided. However, I didn't intend this thread to turn into that.

I specifically would like to see more scripture supporting more of the characterists of God, so others (like huckelberry) can look them up and see for themselves how the word describes our mighty God and may it bring him glory and praise.

Blessings to all

Exactly right mams.

God's judgment is in exact balance with everything else in His character - one "attribute" will not outweigh any other. His judgment is in tune and coincides with His will, so we can (and should) take great joy in His will being accomplished. If anything, we should step back and ask what is the heart of God?

As David said, His judgments are unto righteousness.

Good post, little elmer. A. W. Tozer summed all of this up very succinctly when he wrote (The Knowledge of the Holy) "All of God does all that God does." I read those words over 30 years ago and have never forgotten them.

No, dear June...God is not "illusive' or 'elusive'. He is here waiting for all to come to Him. He is long-suffering, not wanting any to be lost. He is waiting, and waiting, and waiting.....

I think in the course of our relationship, He does carry Himself as one who is passionant, yet guarded against complacency and unfaithfulness on our part. What better way to drive down the roots of faith than to test it?
