I used to go a local UPC church. Well one of my best friends still goes there. She is on the cleaning staff. She's been having back problems and asked if I'd go help her clean this past Saturday. So I did. I went in in black capri pants and a Tinkerbell shirt. Not trashy, pants weren't tight or low cut, shirt was not overy tight....Well the pastor's wife walked by me, stopped, looked at me, I said Hi with a big smile ready to great her politely, and she turned and kept walking without a word. I thought it was my imagination, but it turns out that she talked to my friend and told her that if I come to help her again that I "know their doctrine on clothes and shouldn't disrespect the house of god by wearing pants"....I must say that I was rather upset for awhile. I never would have thought she'd be like that. I find this behavior not to be that of a UPC pastor's wife, but of someone who is really stuck up and arrogant.

Sorry to hear that you had this experience. Just continues to prove the point that while Christians are supposed to do the right thing and follow Christ's example, we often fall short of this; ultimately, this is why we are to look to Christ and not to man to meet all of our expectations. But so sad to hear that someone in that position would be so proud and arrogant to act like that.

One of many stories. You may have been wrong but the pastor's wife could have handled it a lot better. We Christians must remember the way we act or treat people is our testimony of the gospel to the world. I know its hard, believe me I have run into my share of Pastor's wives including Pastors themselves but none of us are perfect, we all have our short comings. Forgive her and pray for her, God will convict her.
Oh the stories I can tell about this. Ever seen a "sister" at a beach (in the Caribbean) at a church outing coming out of the water in a wet t-shirt because the church forbade the wearing of bathing suits because they might cause a "brother to stumble?"
Oh, and we were at the church outing to "come out from amongst them" because on the other side of the island "the sinners" were holding their annual carnival celebration with all the wild revelry and scantily clad women dressed to make men lust. Of course, we had no such eye candy over on our side of the island. DOH!
Oh the good old days. Sister Diane was...er...um...displayed the glory of God rather impressively.

Is there a scripture that says a pastors wife is perfect and should be placed on a pedestal or something? If people would get it in their heads that we're at church for one reason, to worship God, we'd learn to take our eyes off the imperfect people in it and keep our focus on our reason for being there. And, like Jesus said, if you feel unwanted where you are, shake the dust off your feet and move on. Why try to shed a bad light on God and his church b'c of man? Christianity isn't corrupt and/or flawed, people are.
If their is a dress code at a business or office you should observe it or not work there.
Pastor's wife is looking after their franchise and its reputation, if gone unchecked business could be effected.
Reminds me of the time my 14 year old grandson was admonished by our preacher between Sunday school and church,,It was during a grueling heat wave..He had on a new, down to his knees, pair of silky shorts and a matching tshirt..He was very embarrassed and ashamed of the great sin he was accused of..It was also considered bad taste for a woman to enter "Gods House" in pants..I told him to follow me out of the building, I wanted him to know that it is not a sin to go to "church" dressed comfortably..We live a mile up the road..We went home, changed into our blue jeans and neatly ironed shirts and returned in time for communion..IMO, God welcomes believers and non believers alike into his presence no matter what they are clothed in..once a group begins to tell us what we should wear, how our hair is cut, or admonishing us for wearing makeup they are practicing legalism, not worship..
There are churches - such as UPC - that believe a certain style of clothing should not be worn. Neither in the church building, nor in public. While I don't agree with their beliefs in this matter, I do respect them.
On the other hand, it does seem that this pastor's wife could have been more gracious in her attitude.
