Does the fact that grace is a free gift cancel out obedience to the gospel, and to the teachings of Christ and the apostles????

If someone gives you a check for a large sum of money, but you never cash it, is it a 'free gift'?

Does not the free gift of the check require you to do something to benefit from it???

If you have free food all around you, but you refuse to eat, will you be filled?

Hi Marininark. The free gift of grace enables us to be children of GOD and to learn and obey His commandments. We must walk in the SPIRIT, not the flesh. The SPIRIT enables us to obey GOD.

So we must learn and obey the commandments of our LORD JESUS. Those who live according to the flesh will die.

We must accept the free gift just as we must cash the check or eat the food, it is an act of obedience.

Good question Marian.

Hypothetical - Newborn dies during delivery. Where do they go and why?

That's assuming we have a choice. We are carnal by nature thus we want nothing to do with God, we have no desire for Him so how can we go 180 degrees? It is the Holy Spirit that regenerates us. I believe if the gift is given and we receive, not accept it we will automatically benefit from it. If we didn't then that proves we never received the gift. We are bought with a price, the Holy Spirit dwells in us now and we must feed the soul because we hunger spiritually. It is one of the fruits

(John 1:12)
"But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name."

Heaven because even though they are born in sin they don't qualify for the program of salvation.

Fair enough. I believe children, mentally handicapped, even the mentally ill do not qualify for the program of salvation.
In scripture when King David's child died, he was totally convinced that he would see his child in heaven.
(2 Samuel 12:23) "23 But now that he is dead, why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I will go to him, but he will not return to me.

I am afraid I cannot agree with you. Unless the Holy Spirit was with me from the time I was a small child, according to your theory, I could not have been seeking God at that time. I have known there was a God ever since I was small. I have hungered after the word of God long before I obeyed the gospel. But I was not saved until I obeyed the gospel.

Infants are not "born in sin" !!! Infants are pure and innocent until they become capable of recognizing sin.
