YES, that's why it says, "Joseph 'as supposed' i.e son-in-law of Heli. Heli was Mary's father not Joseph's. Jacob is Joseph's father.

Because one is Joseph's ancesters and the other is Jospeh's as Heli's son-in-law because the lineage had to be accounted to the man...Mary's husband Joseph, son of Jacob.

I can't make it any clearer than that.
Thanks for your posts, mship! This lineage thing really isn't something I've studied much... it's interesting to look into it deeper.

I agree with your thought of the "impure lineage" in Matthew having to do with Joseph's line, which really didn't have anything to do with Jesus as far as "blood-line" is concerned.. had overlooked that before.

Thinking through vv. 19-20,
Joseph knew the law and that Mary being pregnant with child and knowing he didn't do it and so therefore she was considered an adulteress and he was going to secretly divorce her.
Yet God intervene by sending an angel in a dream to Joseph, knowing his (Joseph) thoughts about what he was going to do.
Joseph honored & obeyed God and never second guessed what was shown to him and instead of the traditions of their law...he believed God.

Now that is FAITH!... to believe God, and go against what he was taught about the law of adultery. Totally opposite of his up bringing....

We all know it was God's plan! But their faith is so awesome, how these individuals did not fear, doubt, but knew in their hearts when God spoke to them. And they did not waiver to the right or the left...

This may be a leap, but do we take it that the seed of Joseph (Mary's Husband) was implanted in Mary by the Holy Spirit?

Are these generation by blood or by title?
Also, what is the significance of 14 generations?

godspeed,

freedom

Also verse 23 says He will called Immanuel, God is with us. Jesus was God in the flesh, God was really among us.
ILNC, thanks for the insight to the 3rd option.

Regarding Jesus in the flesh.

Why does it not say He is God, rather God is with us? A messengers title.

In that day when a King or Master sent someone on their behalf, it was as if it was directly from the King or Master, they were judged on how they treated the emissary.

Just a nuance to the way it was written, food for thought.

godspeed,

Great insight and so true in our own lives. More than I can count I thought I was at a hard fork in the road that God turned into a 4 way intersection.

All I can think of is the Bluegrass song by NewFound Road "Hell Make a way".

"He'll make way out of no way...when you don't know where to turn, or which way to go"

Newfound Road Full Heart CD

I'll move my post over here too, sorry for the confusion, I thought I was doing a good thing.
After reading - yes the "begats", ironically, what really stood out to me in Chapter 1 was that in the lineage, someone who has no lineage tie to the Christ is mentioned. Uriah. Matt 1:6

Uriah was Bathsheba's husband that David had killed.

That caused me to reread 2Sam 11 and I guess I didn't realize how upstanding and willing of man Uriah was and how much evil was done to him. My heart went out to Uriah in a major way actually.

So what stood out to me was when a "good man" gives of himself and takes no glory and is done wrong/evil, the Lord will see to it that his "good deeds" are not forgotten or in vain. Uriah's good name is recorded in the lineage of the Christ! What a great honor!

God bless all!

Oh and the significance of the lineage in Matthew is to show that Joseph was from the "House of David" as it was foretold that the savior would come from the House of David as well. At least that's what they told me in Bible College.

Blessings,

Jay

...Hello my dear friend! Maybe you would like to move this post to the other thread....created by Alpha...? I had to do the same thing...we kinda got side tracked a little between two threads...just a suggestion...if you'd like to...Love
oh...and in answer to your question...It wasn't the seed of Joseph...because Jesus could not be born of man's seed...because our seed is defiled...thanks to Adam and Eve...yet He had to be born of a woman, as to be All God, and all man, in One...the generations are by blood...fathers having a "son" was EVERYTHING to them...or "children", to "build"...to "repair"...an "anointed" one...<these are meanings of "son." The 14 generations?....honestly...I don't know the significance of this as yet!...but it is an excellant topic for study!!...as we speak, I am in a deep study of the 12 Tribes of Israel...it's fantastic what God is revealing to me in this...!

Nuff said..
Just for the record I wasn't trying to debate anything I was trying to defend the Lord's lineage. If I stepped on any toes by showing my love for anything that has to do with the truth of anything that has to do with my Lord, I apologize and I will leave you alone from now on .

Thanks for reading
I am brand new on the site and am interested. I hope to check in tomorrow with a few thoughts on Matt. 1
I am currently having a challenge with my computer fan and charger on my laptop so the only reason I will not respond is if my computer goes down.
I have read several post and have really felt comfortable so far. It appeared that all the sites I was visiting whether Christan or secular where full of debating and this is a welcome change.
