Watchman Nee
Much thanks for the Watchman Nee quotes, Sandgirl. As you may know, Watchman Nee and T. Austin Sparks were speakers together years ago at Keswick. Both of these men knew and loved God as reflected in their words and life.

For your added pleasure....

C. S. Lewis and George MacDonald (http://www.george-macdonald.com/cslewis.htm - broken link)

He wrote in his preface to George MacDonald: An Anthology,

"I have never concealed the fact that I regarded him as my master; indeed I fancy I have never written a book in which I did not quote from him."

"You need not be afraid to follow Him whithersoever He leads, for He always leads His sheep into green pastures and beside still waters. No matter though you may seem to yourself to be in the very midst of a desert, with nothing green about you inwardly or outwardly and you may think you will have to make a long journey before you can get into any green pastures, the good Shepherd will turn the very place where you are into green pastures; for He has power to make the desert rejoice and blossom as the rose; ...Or perhaps you may say, "My life is all a tempest of sorrow or of temptation, and it will be a long while before I can walk beside any still waters." But has not your Shepherd before this said to the raging seas, "Peace! be still. And there was a great calm"? And can He not do it again? The Shepherd knows what pastures are best for His sheep, and they must not question or doubt, but must trustingly follow Him. Perhaps He sees that the best pastures for some of us are to be found in the midst of opposition or of earthly trials. If He leads you there, you may be sure they are green pastures for you, and that you will grow to be made strong by feeding in them." Hannah Whitall Smith

"The Son of God showed his love for us by dying for us, not when we were good people, but when we were sinners. Can you imagine someone dying for sinners? Would you lay down your life for Hitler? If the United States captured Osama bin Laden, would you offer yourself in his place? I doubt many would. Someone might die for a good person, but Jesus revealed his love in dying for you, me and Osama bin Laden "while we were still sinners." That same Spirit is within Jesus Christ's followers." Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

Watchman Nee had a depth of understanding that few men or women ever get close to. He understood the Word and how it fit with the Spirit and how it was to be applied in a person's life. I really learn from reading his books.

Thanks for posting these links, Birdy. I will check them out

Karl Barth-
Quote:
Only one thing is quite certain: he too has his time and not more than his time. One day others will come who will do the same things better. And some day he will have been completely forgotten--even if he should have built the pyramids or the St. Gotthard tunnel or invented atomic fission. And one thing is even more certain: whether the achievement of a man's life is great or small, significant or insignificant, he will one day stand before his eternal judge, and everything that he has done and performed will be no more than a mole hill, and then he will have nothing better to do than hope for something he has not earned: not for a crown, but quite simply for gracious judgment which he has not deserved. That is the only thing that will count then, achievement or not. "My kindness shall not depart from you." By this man lives. By this alone can he live.

-Robert Farrer Capon-

Quote:
Salvation is not some felicitous state to which we can lift ourselves by our own bootstraps after the contemplation of sufficiently good examples. It is an utterly new creation into which we are brought by our death in Jesus' death and our resurrection in his. It comes not out of our own best efforts, however well-inspired or successfully pursued, but out of the shipwreck of all human efforts whatsoever.

I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My Flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world.
