Has anyone seen this? I heard about it on the radio today and came home and looked it up:

http://www.mercurynews.com/news/ci_11715360 (broken link)

I have to say I'm not surprised. I hear stories like this everyday. Christians are being silenced at every turn. I'm not putting this out to ask why, as a Christian I know the reasons this is happening.

But it's still flabbergasting to me. My goodness, when were we (as a nation) guaranteed that we had the right not be offended? LOL! I'm offended by something or other most everyday (and I won't list those things here) but I accept that others, with differing views, lifestyles, etc., have the same rights as I do (or thought I did) to freedom of religion, speech, expression, and rarely give it a second thought (until lately).

I lament the fall of this (once) great society!

Christians, our rights are eroding before our very eyes!

Where does it (the history of Christianity) ever teach about 'Christian rights'? I don't think that's supposed to be a part of the system.

You have a liberal professor shutting a class down. Now the student is in court suing over it. Doesn't quite sound like an actual loss of 'rights' in this case even though I agree some civil liberties are eroding overall.

Yes, we need to be aware of the governments responsibility to protect religious freedom, but IMO the Christian right is a bit paranoid and I can't stand the 'us vs. them' mentality as a whole.

Are we supposed to be shining lights or protectors or our "Christian" rights? I think we should fight for human rights in general and leave the persecution complex out of it. After all, aren't Christians supposed to be persecuted?

What do you guys think?

If we want free speech, we have to take it all. We can't pick and choose whose opinions are valid.

Once a university starts dictating acceptable positions on issues, it is no longer a valid teaching institution. Their job is to provide information and teach critical thinking. Teach students HOW to think, not WHAT to think.

He was not "silenced" for being a Christian, no matter how much you would like to feel like a martyr over this. He was giving a hate-based speech, and he was forced to quit. Big deal. Same thing would have happened if he'd been of any other religious persuasion.

If you spew hate and bile, you're not going to receive a very good reaction. I sincerely hope he loses his case, because we do not need hate speech in our schools.

Did you hear the speech?you were there?
I dont really understand the situation where the student gave the speech
Colleges have speakers who give speeches against christianity, whites, etc
Anytime a Christian or conservative shows up there are protests,hate..
Being thrown at the speaker,Lecture canceled, etc
Not related 100% to the OP but just to paint a picture of the thought Process we are dealing with.

I read the article posted by the OP. It's very clear from that article that he was not silenced for being a Christian, but for making hateful comments. He would have gotten the same reaction no matter what religion he was; therefore the reaction was NOT about religion but about the hate he was espousing.

I would assume the relevance is in the fact that anyone can spout hate-speech, and just because you're from a certain group doesn't mean that group is being oppressed when your personal hate-speech is silenced.
