Default Is The Free Gift Really Free?

Is the Free Gift really free?

Some Christians believe that eternal life is a free gift from God.

For example, I asked Moderator cut: someone:

Do you think that you need to keep the 10 Commandments to have eternal life?

His answer was:

Yes we must follow all God's all His commandments including the 10 Commandments. But eternal life, "that'" is free gift from God, and if give eternal life, it does not include the 10 Commandments because it is a free gift from God,

Moderator cut: someone says we should follow the ten commandments but that we do not have to follow them to have eternal life because eternal life is a free gift from God.

As you can see his view is essentially no different from the many on this forum. Every body likes the ten commandments until you say you must obey them to have eternal life.

Contrary to Moderator cut: someone’s conclusion - Jesus specifically stated that to have eternal life we must keep the commandments. Remember the rich young ruler?

When Jesus was asked this direct question:

"What good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?"

Jesus gave the man this direct answer:

“…but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.”

Moderator cut: someone says you do not have to keep the ten commandments to have eternal life - Jesus said you must.

That simple test should settle the question forever.... You can be certain that neither Jesus or the apostles ever contradicted Jesus' own words. No matter what verses are used to say we do not have to keep the commandments to have eternal life they cannot contradict Jesus.

Moderator cut: someone's statement that Salvation is a free gift is partly true. It is a free gift - but not free to you or I - it is a free gift to mankind who were all condemned to death through Adam as Paul said here:

Rom 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so *death passed upon all men,* for that all have sinned:

Now please read this very carefully...

Rom 5:18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one *the free gift came upon all men* unto justification of life.

The free gift came upon ALL men. Do all men have salvation? Of course not! Salvation is available to all men - no one is excluded. But to receive that salvation we must have faith in Jesus and keep the commandments of God.

Rev 14:12 Here is the patience of the saints: *here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.

If salvation is a free gift Paul would be a fool for saying this:

Rom 8:13 For if ye live after the flesh, *ye shall die*: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body,* ye shall live. *

If salvation is a free gift why would we have to put to death the deeds of the body to have life?

That is the word of God - it has never changed - Old testament or New... Ezekiel said exactly the same thing as Paul:

Ezekiel 33:15 If the wicked restore the pledge, give again that he had robbed, walk in the statutes of life, *without committing iniquity; he shall surely live, he shall not die.

Ezekiel 18:21 But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, *he shall surely live, he shall not die.*

The righteous shall live. Those who commit iniquity will die.

Ezekiel 33:18 When the righteous turneth from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity,* he shall even die thereby.*

For those who have ears to hear – will you listen to the teachings of Modern Christianity which says that those who transgress the ten commandments will have eternal life because eternal life is a free gift or will you listen to Jesus….

“…but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.”

Call me stupid, but didn't the "New Covenant" replace the "Old Covenant?" At least that's what June had been taught, long, long ago...As such, in Jesus fulfilling the Old Testament, Old Covenant law/prophecy, wouldn't acceptance of him and that imply in accepting Him and His message, that the Ten Commandments still apply, but within a newly defined context?

--Why June even bothers to post this is simply beyond her, but what the heck? It's a weekend...

Take gentle care.

Interpret this as you will...

...and tell me if you think it's free.

Being conformed into His image isn't for pansies.

Nah... You're probably just mis-interpreting these verses :

Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill.

For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished.

Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 5:17-20

Matthew 5:17-20
And whose righteousness is He speaking of?

It's all pointing to His life.
