My love and admiration for all kinds of musical styles had me pondering this the other day. Most hit songs of the pop-rock-hip-hop nature are highly secular, many are highly immoral, but there have been a few sizeable hit records over the years that have strong religious-Christian ties.

The other day I listened to one of my favorite Bible-based songs that became a hit record, and that was Love Lifted Me, sung by one of my favorite singers, Kenny Rogers.

I have also grown to admire the band Mercy Me. A few years ago their song I Can Only Imagine became a nation-wide hit that was given heavy airplay on many pop stations.

So can anyone else think of some religious songs that became hits with a more secular audience?

I agree with Buckeye:
There a lot of Christian music that's being embraced in the secular
even as far back as the early 60's as I can remember
they were even played in nightclubs

Real old school. Turn, Turn, Turn by the Byrds.

"...is a song adapted entirely from the Book of Ecclesiastes in the Bible (with the exception of the last line)..."

I don't know if it's a hit, but Kanye West singing "I'll Fly Away". Wonder if he's flying away from the "Gold Digger"?

I remember many of these. I should have known about Place in this World, that was one of my favorites in the early-'90s. Michael W. Smith also sang a few other faith-based songs that became hits.

Carrie Underwood also had a hit with Jesus Take the Wheel, I think it was a year or two ago. I had a lapse of memory when I started this thread but now lots of religious-oriented songs are coming to mind.
