Bishops/Overseer Man of One Wife?
[ Folks ;I need help with this one please!!
there are many ministers that have second marriages

A minister then must be a man of irreproachable character, true to his one wife, temperate, sober-minded, well-behaved, hospitable to strangers, and with a gift for teaching;
ITimothy 3:2
just any input on this please and break it down if you have time
Thanks
God Bless

The 'one' is numeral one and not 'a'.
The text does not say "only one wife", nor does it say "at least one wife"; which would each imply other things.
Now read it in context, the verses 4 and 5 shed great light on the requirements of church leadership.
You can not have raised children without a wife.
They must be proven as leaders of their own household, before being given leadership of a church.

What's the problem? It is as you read but many in churches today are pragmatist so they discount scripture in such matters. Just as long as that person is preaching the gospel, then that is all that matters so it must be good because it is from God? Pastors have gotten divorced in the pulpit, men and women who were not called or given the gift of teaching have become Pastors etc..... I am not trying to be judgmental but you quoted the scripture, the scripture is everlasting, unwavering without compromise unfortunately we can not say the same about ourselves dealing with scripture.

This is talking about elders of the church, right?
I believe it's just as it says. They need to be married, and only to one wife.

What is supposed to happen with these ministers/elders/Bishops/Deacons that have had mutiple marriages and are still in positions of leadership in the congregation? would a person stay under someone who has willfully and knowingly rebelled against God's word? or is it best to hightail it out of their and not be under them when consequences to this sin comes ? since the mantle runs from the head down? one would be partaking in another's sins since these are sins that are known and not hidden, what's the deal on this?
|
Then I heard another voice from heaven say: "Come out of her, my people, so that you will not share in her sins, so that you will not receive any of her plagues;

The fifteenth qualification for a prospective bishops says, "[b]One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?[/B
What happens when a deacon or minister has a adult son living in the home that is an atheist?

A man whose marriage fails regardless of who was at fault cannot present a proper example to other believers. He may be a godly man after his divorce but unfortunately the sigma of divorce will forever mark him and make his familial leadership abilities suspect and thereby disqualifying him for this responsibility.

I think a case could be made for the man re-entering the ministry at some point...but if a man's marriage fails, he should, in my mind, resign and find some other form of work.
