Just when you thought the sex abuse scandal was over here in the USA

Allegations of Sexual Abuse
at Catholic Residential Institutions
in the United States

Allegations of Sexual Abuse at Catholic Residential Institutions in the United States

But this time considering what has happened over in Ireland, Rome cannot like they did in the original sex scandal here claim it is just a problem with the American Church.

Why are there so many sex abuse cases within the Catholic Church?

Is it because of the celibacy requirement?

Here is a start...........

Report: Protestant Church Insurers Handle 260 Sex Abuse Cases a Year - Ecuador.com Discussion Forum

Sex abuse spans spectrum of churches | csmonitor.com
"The Catholics have gotten all the attention from the media, but this problem is even greater with the Protestant churches simply because of their far larger numbers," he says.

Celibacy has nothing to do with it. A pedophile is a pedophile is a pedophile.

Here is an article that does not have a religious environment surrounding
recent abuse. It is also more current. The posting by ted08721
was regarding historic abuse cases from the 70's and 80's. The suspected
implication here is that abuse in the RC Church is ongoing even though measures
have been taken to root this completely out of the RC Church.

Unfortunately, abuse happens just about everywhere. Read below.

Quote:
Texas Abuse Statistics « icad

June 14, 2009 from the International coalition on abuse and disability
"The Associted Press obtained information regarding abuse, neglect and
other conditions at Texas’ large institutions for the people
with mental and developmental disabilities.
During 2008, 268 employees were suspended or fired for maltreatment
of residents, bringing the number to about 1100
for the last five years. The number of cases was up from 239 in 2007."

Dear ted08721---a public letter---

You declare that you are Roman Catholic, yet you demean your chosen faith
every chance you can get. Granted, complaints sometimes need to be
voiced, however, constant complaints that have undertones of destruction are
a serious matter. I want you step back and look at how your feelings have been
manifesting lately. It is anger that you are feeling. It is displaced anger.

Please read up on the psychological nature of displacement. And if
you need to have care regarding this....believe this...the very church
that you are displacing your anger onto, WILL (even still) help you
into a happier frame of mind. All you need to do is ask. You will
be forgiven. You will be helped. God still loves you.

As the report says ....

" ...most of the alleged abusers are not clergy or staff, but church volunteers. "

This article talks about ONE sex abuse case

These isolated cases are not even close to proving DNick's claim that "the Protestant world has the same rate of sexual abuses as the Catholic Church."

Still pale in comparison to Catholic sex abuse cases

" Ultimately, it became clear that, over several decades in the 20th, priests and lay members of religious orders in the Catholic Church had sexually abused minors on a scale such that the accusations reached into the thousands. Although the majority of cases were reported to have occurred in the United States, victims have come forward in other nations such as Ireland, Canada and Australia. A major aggravating factor was the actions of Catholic bishops to keep these crimes secret and to reassign the accused to other parishes in positions where they had continued unsupervised contact with youth, thus allowing the abusers to continue their crime.
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops commissioned a comprehensive study that determined that, during the period from 1950-2002, a total of 10,667 individuals had made allegations of child sexual abuse by 4,392 priests. This number represents 4% of the 109,694 priests that served from 1950-2002. Of the 4392 priests who were accused, police were contacted regarding 1021 individuals and of these, 384 were charged resulting in 252 convictions and 100 prison sentences. "

" by the end of the mid 1990s, it was estimated that ...more than half a billion dollars had been paid in jury awards, settlements and legal fees." This figure grew to about one billion dollars by 2002. Roman Catholics spent $615 million on sex abuse cases in 2007 "

" The multi-million dollar payouts to victims has had a significant impact on the finances of many dioceses. Many of them have had to close schools and parishes in order to raise the funds to make these payments. "

In any case, numbers don't matter, both Catholic and Protestant sex offenders ought to be ashamed.
