I disagree. Here's the thing: eg. bar codes really do have 666--two thin lines at the beginning, the middle and the end of the bar codes. Prophecy teachers have been teaching for years that the bar code is the mark that will be implanted on our body strictly because it has 666 on it. Now that the number of the beast has been proven to be 616 it makes bar codes totally irrelevant far as the mark of the beast goes. That bar code thing was a huge drawing card for prophecy teachers to hook gullible Christians into believing their schpiel--"Look! Revelation tells us we'll all have to take the mark of the beast, 666, and here it is: Tada! Technology has developed the bar code; it's on all the products you buy! Now the antichrist will make everyone take a chip with a bar code on their forehead or their right hand or be beheaded!" So what do prophecy teachers teach now, having taught all these years that bar codes are a tool of antichrist? Can't rewrite the chapter. What do they say? "Whoops, bar codes really aren't the mark of the beast cause the real number is 616, not the 666 that is visible on the bars!" Do you know what that'll do to their book sales? Can you say "Down in flames!!!" The only thing that can save their skin is for the World Trade Organization to revamp the bar codes so they read 616. Then the teachers can say, "Yes, the bar codes have the number of the antichrist. It's 616"

By the way...the story that the bar code is the number 666....is a lie.

It was invented and gets passed on a lot, but its a Christian myth.

It's like the other common Christian myth about men having one less rib...
all based on a false understanding of science made by guys who dont have a clue.

666 wrong number of prophetic beast?
Well the truth is, the fragment found is dwarfed by the thousands of copies that were made from older copies of the New Testament. And almost everyone of those copies has the number 666 in them. So to suggest that one found fragment dismisses thousands of such copies would be nonsense. Your fragment comes from the late third century, yet many of the copies of the Book of Revelation were made from second century texts. So your fragment does not represent the bottom line.

It would also be written to cover a reasonable short period of occurrence not over generations. My thoughts. I believe Christianity to be written and speaks to the individual more than the congregation. I am not personally big on religion. Too many to keep up with.. As the comedian says if there is only room for 144,000 don't you think it might be a good idea to shut up about it. There may be only a few seats left
Well the 144,000 is pretty clear - that only speaks of the firstfruits.

I think any study bible you read will have a good footnote on the 666/616 question.

from what I read the best, oldest works have the number 666, but some later works do have the other number.

From the article:

"This is very early confirmation of that number, earlier than any other text we've found of that passage," Aitken said. "It's probably about 100 years before any other version."
So which is the truth?
