The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; A good understanding have all those who do His commandments; His praise endures forever.

The overarching theme of the bible is reverence for God. This reverenential (love that word ) awe and admiring, submissive fear is foundational for all spiritual knowledge and wisdom. While the unbeliever may make statements about life and truth, he does not have true or ultimate knowledge until he is in a redemptive relationship of reverential awe with God.

The progress is as follows
1) Teaching about God
2)Learning about God
3) Fearing God
4) Knowing God
5) Imitating God's wisdom.

The fear of the Lord is a state of mind in which one's own attitudes, will, feelings, deeds and goals are exchanged for God's

Nicely worded. I like that verse. It's much deeper when you think a little about it. At first glance some might think God enjoys that we should be scared of him, but that's not it at all.

Fear is the absolute opposite of love. God is love. If there is a Satan . . . his greatest accomplishment has been to inject and perpetuate the doctrine of fear of God . . . it absolutely prevents any "REAL LOVE of God and each other." In Satanic terms . . . a homerun!!! Fear as the BEGINNING of Wisdom meant just that . . . it was the beginning for our primitive ancestors who had NO other basis for developing self-control. IT was NEVER intended to be continued. Jesus brought the true message . . . LOVE . . . and it has been effectively scuttled by the perpetuation of the fear doctrine and the ridiculous threat of eternal hell or punishment. It boggles.

There is a difference between fear "as in terror" and fear "as in reverance/respect" Mystic.

I believe this "fear" that is the beginning of wisdom is talking about reverence.

The amplified version always gives expanding meaning and insight on this:

Psalm 111:10 The reverent fear and worship of the Lord is the beginning of Wisdom and skill [the preceding and the first essential, the prerequisite and the alphabet]; a good understanding, wisdom, and meaning have all those who do [the will of the Lord]. Their praise of Him endures forever.

Reverent fear and worship. NOT fearful terror.

And now I will throw the UR monkey wrench into this (just for you Fundy, enjoy!):

Rev 15:4 Who will not fear you, Lord,
and glorify your name?
For you alone are holy.
All nations will come and worship before you,
for your righteous deeds have been revealed.

Can we agree that the answer to the rhetorical question in Rev 15:4 is NO ONE?
Does this imply this will be the beginning of wisdom for all people?

I have heard this rationalization many times, legoman . . . it is simply that . . . a rationalization. When accompanied by the heinous ET and punishment rationales the effect is unambiguous. Such fear is completely incompatible with love . . . this causes a separation from God that can only be repaired and established with real love . . . NOT fearful reverence. Our emotions are complex . . . but the key to resonance with God and Jesus is "LOVE." period.
