I think God is trying to teach us. And He is teaching us through experience (some of these experiences are natural disasters like famines, floods, tsunamis, etc).

He is teaching us His awe and wonder.
He is teaching us to overcome calamity.
He is teaching us to overcome evil with good.
He is teaching us to endure and survive.
He is teaching us to feel the need to help others.
He is teaching us to help others.
He is teaching us to mourn when others die.
He is teaching us patience.
He is teaching us what really matters in life.

It all comes back to the purpose of life: to learn how to LOVE.

Legoman, thank you for your thoughts on this. I am studying some of the scriptures I presented the OP and I wanted to gain others perspectives on what they make out or get from them.
