Simple Gifts was written by Shaker Elder Joseph Brackett, Jr. in 1848. It was first published in The Gift to be Simple: Shaker Rituals and Songs. Simple Gifts was a work song sung by the United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing (more commonly called the Shakers, an offshoot of the Quakers).
'Tis the gift to be simple,
'tis the gift to be free,
'tis the gift to come down where you ought to be,
And when we find ourselves in the place just right,
It will be in the valley of love and delight.
Refrain:
When true simplicity is gained,
To bow and to bend we shan't be ashamed.
To turn, turn will be our delight,
'Til by turning, turning we come round right
'Tis the gift to be loved and that love to return,
'Tis the gift to be taught and a richer gift to learn,
And when we expect of others what we try to live each day,
Then we'll all live together and we'll all learn to say,
Refrain:
'Tis the gift to have friends and a true friend to be,
'Tis the gift to think of others not to only think of "me",
And when we hear what others really think and really feel,
Then we'll all live together with a love that is real.
Just a reminder to you guys- Because of copyright laws, I think CD will remove any lyrics you post. It's my understanding we can post a link or a title but not the complete lyrics. They say this is for our own legal protection. Just a word to the wise here-
Mooseketeer, yours may be so old it's public domain now, though!
I'm not into the contemporary Christian music It's like "Yeah! Yeah! God is Great!" However I want to hear about the struggle to maintain a Christian Life or the struggle to turn one's life around. I'm not knocking Christian music, I just ain't into it.
I am listing some songs that got me thinking about God.
Infamous Angel by Iris Dement
Recovering Pharisee by Del McCoury
My Songbird by Emily Lou Harris
Divine Intervention by Matthew Sweet
The Christian Life by Charlie Louvin
I Won't Back Down by Tom Petty
What a Wonderful World by Louie Armstrong

Will The Circle Be Unbroken?
Almost any song that is sung by Ralph Stanley gets me thinking about God.
Almost any song sung by U2 gets me thinking about God.
Wow, I have just read all of the posts on this thread. Great songs! I can't believe that "Shout to the Lord" has not been mentioned yet. Powerful lyrics on that one!

Blessed be Your Name by Matt Redman....saw him in concert with Chris Tomlin and he said he wrote the song just after 9/11. This somehow makes it that much more meaningful whenever I sing it.
Everyday is a new day
I'm thankful for every breath I take
I won't take you for granted (I won't take you for granted)
So I learn from my mistakes
It's beyond my control
Sometimes it's best to let go
Whatever happens
In this lifetime
So I trust in love (so I trust in love)
You have given me
Peace of mind
Chorus:
I feel so alive
For the very first time
I can't deny you
I feel so alive
I feel so alive
For the very first time
And I think I can fly (fly)
Sunshine upon my face (sunshine upon my face)
A new song for me to sing
Tell the world how I feel inside (Tell the world how I feel inside)
Even though it might
Cost me everything
Now that I know this
So beyond, I can't hold this
I can never
Turn my back away
Now that I've seen you (Now that I've seen you)
I can never look away
Repeat chorus
Now that I know you
(I could never turn my back away)
Now that I see you
(I could never look away)
Now that I know you
(I could never turn my back away)
Now that I see you
(I believe no matter what they say!)
A very meaningful song and an awesome metal tune.
