I'm not religious but I once was, and I think historically speaking Dani is correct...just because God is normally capitalized doesn't make it a real name. It is much clearer in Arabic than in English..."ilah" is a generic, pagan god, "Allah" (which Arab Christians use just as Arab Muslims do) is a contraction of al-ilah (meaning THE God.) When people say "my god" there is no telling which god they mean--could be their car, could be whiskey, could be whatever they value most.

Exactly. It means nothing other than as an interjection of surprise, dismay, or other emotion.

Personally, I use the four letter word before I say oh my G*d. My mother can have a sailor mouth sometimes but one thing that isnt tolerated in our house is using God's name without reverence.

Personally, as a Christian, saying "Oh my God" isn't cussing to me and I don't feel it's a big deal AT ALL. I say it and feel no conviction for it. It's simply an exclamation, not an explitive. People need to get a life.

Now, when something bad happens, and then people say "Jesus Christ!", or stick that nasty "F word" in there as a middle name....THAT bugs me. Alot. Mucho disrespectful.

Even though "God" is a title it is still the name of the Almighty. Read the 2nd Commandment... Thou shall not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain. See, he used the title "God."

When I was a Christian this bothered me, too. I used to think to myself, "Don't these people realize what they're saying?!" The answer is, no, they don't realize what they're saying. I think it's something that most people in general just don't think about. Most of the Christians I know use the phrase casually all the time (along with plenty of other "colorful" language). Even though I'm no longer a Christian, I still almost never use it. I guess that's mainly because I trained myself not to for so long that it just doesn't come naturally, just like swearing.

It's not just "these days", it's always been a common phrase.

That's precisely not being used as a title. People assume it is because it customarily gets capitalized in English. It's no more a title than "car" is in the sentence "don't rear-end my Car"--if for some unremembered reason long ago we decided to capitalize "car".

No it is not. I am not Dani the Mother. The lord thy god....the name of....you don't make any sense. Lord and god are not names!
