Last night I was watching PBS and there was an episode of Independent Lens that profiled a catholic church in Lawrence, MA.

During the show, they showed some of the parishioners having water poured over their feet and wiped away by someone. What does that symbolize?

I think it symbolized Jesus washing people's feet. It was a submissive thing that servants did.

The priest does this during Lent. 12 parishioners come up on the alter and the priest pours water over their feet just as Jesus did to the apostles (He washed their feet) to show He came not to be served but to serve. It is a humble thing to do and a lesson Jesus was giving to us. Think more of how can I serve than how can I be served.
