what is a soul according to the Scriptures?
I've been studying this subject for a while now.
I am not trying to change anyone's mind on how they believe. I would hope that they would take a closer look at the Scriptures.
H5315
נפשׁ
nephesh
neh'-fesh
From H5314; properly a breathing creature, that is, animal or (abstractly) vitality; used very widely in a literal, accommodated or figurative sense (bodily or mental): - any, appetite, beast, body, breath, creature, X dead (-ly), desire, X [dis-] contented, X fish, ghost, + greedy, he, heart (-y), (hath, X jeopardy of) life (X in jeopardy), lust, man, me, mind, mortality, one, own, person, pleasure, (her-, him-, my-, thy-) self, them (your) -selves, + slay, soul, + tablet, they, thing, (X she) will, X would have it.
This word is used for a total of 749 times, words such as life, persons, heart, mind, body, creature, desire, pleasure, beast, appetite, breath, fish, myself, these are just a few of the long list.
Gen 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
Became a living soul, a living person.
What about the New Testament?
G5590
ψυχή
psuchē
psoo-khay'
From G5594; breath, that is, (by implication) spirit, abstractly or concretely (the animal sentient principle only; thus distinguished on the one hand from G4151, which is the rational and immortal soul; and on the other from G2222, which is mere vitality, even of plants: these terms thus exactly correspond respectively to the Hebrew [H5315], [H7307] and [H2416]: - heart (+ -ily), life, mind, soul, + us, + you.
this word is used 105 times words such as life, lives, minds, heart,
to my thinking soul is a living breathing person and not something added separate from our body.

When the body dies, does the soul die with it?

The soul is the real you. Without it, you would not exist. The material body is only for this world and once it dies, your soul ascends into the spirit world where you will continue your journey towards God.

To my thinking the soul is the person, I don't believe the soul is separate from the body. The Bible says that Adam became a living soul a living breathing soul and could die

Spirits are a part of us. Human beings are souls. The soul is us. Our body is just a shell.

I agree.
The whole person is called a soul in the bible... its meaning has changed since then, but the original meaning is just person.
flesh + spirit = soul

Or not. The spirit or soul is judged, and then either joins God, or goes to hell, from his presence.

Man needs to believe in a soul, a non-physical essence that can outlast the physical body and survive into eternity after the material body dies. This belief helps to alleviate man's greatest fear, the fear of death and of passing through the door from life into oblivion. That is the deepest fear. The soul had to be invented. With the invention of the soul, at least a part of man can now ride through another door after death. This one can lead into an existence that is brighter than any previously experienced. That is the promise of the soul. Man needs his/her illusions and dreams because the reality of existence is not enough.

A soul cannot be in the presence of God unless it is Divine and purified of all sin and the tendencies to sin. This takes a very long time unless you are born without sin or tendencies to sin. So, our soul "progresses" to be in the presence of God. We cannot be in His presence until we experience the New Birth of the soul. If you die without this then you will need to progress. As far as I know, no one has experienced this except for Jesus. Are you just like Jesus? If not, then you will need to become Divine as Jesus did. Progress of the soul.
We are being judged everyday. It does not start in the spirit world. It starts the day you are born.
I also believe that any place that is not where God is, is hell. We will go to a place that our soul condition determines. No one, ever, who has died has been in the presence of God.
