What does the bible say about participation in illegal activities, anything?

I'm not a bible scholar, unfortunately. So I don't know.

I know someone who is, IMO, acting very hypocritical in that they seem to want to live every aspect of their life in a christian like way, as best as possible, which is good. However, this person is an avowed pot-head.

I know before long, it seems, states will likely legalize marajuana. But for the meantime, it is illegal (and I don't agree with legalizing it). But this person, other than the pot smoking is in general a good person. But as of right now, smoking weed, is not legal.

I just would like to know Christ's teachings, if any, on the rule of law, the mandate to follow the law in living a christian existence.

The Bible is quite clear that the law should be obeyed- that civil rulers are God's creation, to preserve order and safe societies. Of course, sometimes governments do not behave in a way that preserves order, because they may make Christianity illegal- in which case they are in open rebellion against God. But in normal circumstances, the law is to be obeyed. 'Caesar' must be paid whatever is his due.

'Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, because there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. Because rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you. He is God's servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, because he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God's servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment, but also because of conscience.' Ro 13:1-5

In Matthew 5:25 Jesus said ..`` Agree with your adversary quickly while you are in the way with him , lest at any time the adversary delivers you to the judge and the judge delivers thee to the officer and you are cast into prision..... very I say unto you, You shall by no means come out thence till you have paid the uttermost farthing````...... Jesus said work quickly or you will not get a second chance to avoid jail,... Jesus can get you out of jail but you have to give first all you can and be a blessing for your jailer.......Marajuana and tobacco and other abusive habits are a no go with Holy Spirit and people have to get delivered through the move and power of Holy Spirit ..... So pray Father I understand that you have plan for this person that has abusive habits....... I ask forgivness for this person and plead to blood of Jesus over this person in Jesus name. abas thie evil spirit that is bothering this person with these habits, and help them overcome these addictions against the will to quit these habits in Jesus Name........... Jesus gives good gifts, you have to bless this person with his good gifts and support this person in pray that is not rebellous against the will of God to be a blessing or condemn this person and the victory is the Lords......

Yet if it is legalized... Alcohol is legal and Christians drink. I had two grandfathers and both died of liver failure at an early age. So my pothead brother doesn't really bother me, even if it is illegal right now.

There are bigger sins to fry. IMO

One thing Jesus did not do was have Caesar create more laws that would then cause some to sin.

This is the problem I have with Christians who push for more things to be illegal or fight to keep things illegal, they are helping to create sin.

Christians don't do that.

Really? So who was behind Prop 8 (Defense of Marriage Act) in CA?

How many Christians are helping to pass the legalize marijuana law in CA? Or even support it's medical use. How many Christians were in support of the old ban or would gladly ban porn?

Default Bible and legalities

SIGH

This wasn't posted as a point of debate for legalization or not of marajuana.

That, is for another thread. Great Debates perhaps.

This was a legitimate question. What does christianity teach about participation in something that is (as of right now) considered "illegal" for recreational use. Period.

This is an individual who is otherwise a fine upstanding citizen, hard worker, good-person. Not necessarily church-going or involved, but very much a believer in Christ and in fact a regular bible reader.

This is a person who smokes weed with his adult off-spring. I find it awfully hypocritical.

And yes, I do know what the bible has to say about "being judgemental". So I don't need stones thrown my way on that topic. I don't smoke weed, don't enjoy it, but I do other things that are sinful, not a one of us is perfect. I'm just questioning where in the bible it might read that because it's of an "organic" nature, which is an argument that gets thrown around, ......... it's alright to use it.

Where in the bible it would be alright for the father figure of these folks, to participate in (granted these are all legal/consenting adults) an activity that is, as of this day and age, "illegal".
