Hi everyone,
Paul says he "gave one over to the devil for the destruction of the flesh so that the spirit might be saved. What's this all about? Why doesn't anyone talk about this? Are any of you doing things like this? Is it risky? What about free will? How does this fit in with UR and ET?

Your thoughts very welcome!

Blessings,
brian

Basically if a person is acting with no regard to Christ even though he/she is saved, God can give them over to Satan for disciplinary measures (Heb. 12:5-11).

Think of Job. Now he wasn't disobedient, so this is a little different - but God did hand him over to Satan for a time. Job lost his house, possessions, and health. In Job's case, he remained faithful to God - and God rewarded him. In the case of someone who is totally disobedient, losing everything may get a person to refocus on the Lord and turn away from sinful desires.

In 1 Corinthians 5:5 ...` To deliver such an one unto satan for the destruction of the flesh that the spirit may be saved of the Lord Jesus``...... Basicly means in the days of Apostle Paul there was a small church in thoses days, like about no more than twenty church gathering in the world where believer could go and all the rest where pagan and all these churches communicated with each other through the Apostles....and if they would deliver them to satan would mean that they would be excommunicated out of the church until they turned from there evil ways and repented and were let back to the church.......the destruction of the flesh means that the flesh realm is the realm of demons and where sin can be manipulated to man, these people would repent and reject satans sin and the spirit of man would be saved from this carnal sin and return to the liberty of Christ........In the days of the Protestent reformation many Kingdoms in Nations resisted the change because the Pope had sole authority to heaven in those days......

Interesting questions indeed. I would say it is very risky behavior to hand oneself over to the devil.....maybe He was talking about the "old man"?

Precisely. It's a spin on the concept of "iron sharpens iron", but God can and does use evil to accomplish His will in us - which is of course to deal with the flesh and cause us to cry out for Him.

All of creation gives Him glory, even what the carnal mind sees as evil (as in the knowledge of good and evil). He created the waster to destroy. (Isa 54:16)
