There are many web pages discussing the concept of heaven and hell. Feel free to add links here to discussions of Heaven and Hell that you find worth reading. Here's one I just read this evening. I can't say I totally agree with it, but the point is, there are way more opinions on heaven/hell than the fundamentalist black & white image that biblical literalists hold.

The paragraph below is a snippet from that link.

St. Ignatious of Antioch, in the late first and early second century, describe God as the furnace that a craftsman uses to temper a sword. When a properly prepared sword is placed within the fire, it makes it stronger and the sword takes on the properties of the fire, it gives off heat and light. However, this same fire will melt and destroy a sword that was not properly prepared.
