mpg is nothing spectacular at 17/24, I was thinking hwy mileage should've been better. Looks sharp but these vehicles are pretty damn pricey! Top of the line summit is $55,000 fully loaded, YIKES! You could get a BMW X5 for that.
Wow that looks nice. I have never had a jeep but a good friend of mine has one and has had no problems for 5 years! I think they are pretty reliable now.
I traded in my '12 GC Laredo for a '14 Limited. Interior difference is night and day. I went with the top end 8.4" stereo though. The 8 speed tranny makes a world of difference as well with the V6. If you're worried about gas mileage, you don't need to be driving a Jeep. It's a 4600lb vehicle, you're not going to be getting 30-40mpg in it. Mine tops out around 24 out on the highway.
That said, I've also driven an X5. They're nice, but I'd rather have the Jeep.
Probably a decent vehicle. Not crazy about the front end treatment. Looks like it was designed by "focus groups" rather than anyone with a grasp on style.
Different purposes. You'd never offroad in an X5. The refinement of the interior in the Jeep is lacking in comparison. It's more about the power and capability for the Jeep. Still, I would definitely not pay $55k for one unless it's an SRT (the interior is still sub-par, but you're paying for performance).
I agree with your main point though - $47k to start for a non-SRT is crazy.
I just visited my Dodge Dealer and they had a Jeep G.C. SRT8 and the interior was so beautiful! Way better than the interior of my 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT. If I won the Lotto I'd get the Limited with the 3.0 diesel, tow package, and luxury group 2 [dual sunroof] for $47,700.
I think the GC's are very nice trucks, but would struggle to pay the entry price for one of the higher end, more expensive models. A top of the line Grand Cherokee is priced in line with tons of very nice lux brand trucks, many of which I would likely choose first!
Now if we are talking a more basic, run of the mill GC, I would certainly consider it and may choose it over other possibilities like Explorers or Pilots.

A good number of those higher end lux trucks will cost you an arm and a leg in maintenance too. Also, not many of them come with real AWD. Audi does, and I believe a few MB's do. And none of them are off-road worthy if you want to go off pavement.
That said, I wouldn't choose a new Explorer over much of anything. It's a neutered ghost of its former self. If I hadn't gotten my GC, I'd probably have been looking at an Audi Q5 or possibly would have gone to a 4-Runner. The Toyota has almost zero of the refinement the GC has though, but it's at least off road worthy. I paid less than 40K for my Limited after TTL back in Feb, with options.
