We had two Cherokees with the 4.0, 1989 and a 1996. Both great, reliable rigs.
They went down hill after that, when we bought a 2002 Liberty 3.7. The engine was about the only thing that was still going when we traded it in on a Ford at 99,000. The transmission had to be rebuilt at 90,000 at the cost of $3,400. The main reason I will never deal with Chrysler-Jeep again is that every one I have been to, (4 in our area) the service department has tried one trick or another to try and rip us off. I had the trans rebuilt by an independent shop.
Even when I took the Jeep in for the airbag recall they told me the front brakes needed replacing, I took it to the independent guy and he called to tell me they still had 30% left.
Most jeep folks would never buy a newer one My 90 wrangler is carb on a 258 and never broke down, same with my 90 xj with the indesructable 4.0 fi 6. the tj's are ok except for those sqigly things supporting the front axle.after that forget it they are marketing to a different crowd.YJ is the new CJ and that's it folks
2009 Jeep Cherokee. Rocker arm failure caused $4,600.00 in damage. Car had only 45k miles and was always well maintained and never abused. Chrysler will not even give me a partial reimbursement or even a credit to apply to future repairs or purchase. Their excuse was that the car was out of warranty. Yes, I get that, however, with the advanced technology in manufacturing you would expect any car if properly treated to last longer than 45k miles. There are multiple complaints on the internet about this problem.
The last Jeep Cherokee XJ was built in 2001. There was no Jeep Cherokee made again until the KL Cherokee came out as a 2014 model. There was no Jeep Cherokee in 2009.
Is the Jeep a pushrod motor? I don't know a thing about them, honestly.
One thing I'll give GM mucho credit for is that they've seemed to perfect the pushrod motor. Been used in every Corvette since the beginning with the exception of the LT5 and that was built by Mercury Marine.
They even have the pushrod motor at nearly 7k RPM which just maybe 15 years ago wasn't really thought of.
The thing about pushrod motors; it's pretty much the oldest design. There are a few ohc engines here and there across the time spectrum, but it's not like gm is a pushrod god, since at one point about, say; 85% of all engines were pushrod up until the 90' or so.
Buy a Bentley. Bentley says they build cars to last 100 years.
Fords Trucks, too. Or a Bentley. My Dad says that is the God's honest. We had two Ford Trucks and they are still running. One is really old, 1970 we sold that one a few years back, but a still see it around town. And a 1991, a better looking one if you ask me. Oddly enough, we never did have a Bentley.
Jeep is the one brand I truly like and if they weren't so expensive Id own one. Ive had many in the past however and they have never given me anymore problems than any other car ive ever owned.
