What kind of vehicles did the Chrysler Newport compete with back in the day?

I am thinking that at least through the late 60s and early 70s that its competition was cars like the Buick LeSabre and Oldsmobile Delta 88 from the GM line... from the FMC line, I would say cars like the Mercury Marquis.

Even though they were Chryslers, the base Newports were alittle plain looking to be Chryslers- so more in line with the base LeSabres/LeSabre Customs.... when you got up into the New Yorker, they were more in line with the Buick Electra and Mercury Marquis Brougham.

Was there any year inparticular you are referring to?

I was referring to the 1960s/early 1970s models, I always the Newport's competed with cars like Mercury Monterey and Buick LeSabre but I wasn't really sure, I definitely agree with you that the base Newport's were a little plain looking to be Chryslers

Wasn't that also the case with the Cadillac Calais (very rare model)?

Yeah... I was also going to say Mercury Monterey, but I think it MAY be alittle on the cheaper looking side of even the base Newport of the 70s... maybe the late 60s compare well though. I will look into that.

Yeah, the Cadillac Calais was rather plain looking in trim for a Cadillac, but was still a costly car. I think a base '72 Cadillac Calais was a good $1000-1500 more than a loaded '72 Buick Electra (which I would have preferred over a plain-Cadillac).... $1000 was a good chunk of money in '72. The Calais basically lacked alot of chrome and woodgrain accents that graced the DeVilles and Fleetwoods. They also lacked vinyl tops. I think that the 75-76 Calais were a little more luxurious looking though.

I will post more photos later, but as a quick comparison, here are some '72/'73 model example factory photos... (there is more discussion about this on another thread on here)

I also thought the Cadillac Calais were rather too plain jane looking for my liking, I would rather get a Oldsmobile 98 or a Buick Electra over the Cadillac Calais anyday, I was never sure if the Calais ever came with a vinyl top or not yet you were able to get vinyl tops for the full size cars like the Ford Galaxie 500 and the Chevy Impala Custom, I liked the Chrysler Newport Custom's better than the plain Newport's myself, they look almost similar to the Chrysler New Yorker's IMO

I personally liked the Marquis's interior the best, I thought they looked the most luxurious and the most comfortable interiors of them all

Default EZ answer

just look at what CR's tested the Newport against:

1969-Bonneville, Monterey, LeSabre

1972- Marquis, LeSabre, Delta 88

The Newport for 69 was found to be a noisy beast; for 72 it got quieter but was rated last

Were the downsized R body Chrysler Newport's from 1979-81 less luxurious than the Newport's from the previous years?

Hmmmm.... lets see.

1981 New Yorker 5th Avenue
http://www.oldcarbrochures.com/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=33893 &g2_serialNumber=2 (broken link)

1979 Newport

http://www.oldcarbrochures.com/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=33785 &g2_serialNumber=2 (broken link)

and the 1977 Newport
http://www.oldcarbrochures.com/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=33656 &g2_serialNumber=2 (broken link)

look at the 1977 New Yorker Brougham in comparison... (I think this was the Cadillac Fleetwood 4dr and Lincoln Town Cars competition, as by now I think the Imperial 4dr was gone, but this car looks alot like the '75 Imperial).
