I worked for the promotion director of Swifton when I was at Woodward. Bob Braun was there for some show, and my job was to keep him loaded with lime freezes...No alcohol We lived on reading road and our apartment looked over the empty lot (now the big church) at Langdon Farm and Reading. We watched Swifton being built. Before the opening of Rollmans, there was a "tour" of the store with escalator safety instructions.. We sled rode at Maketewah Country Club. I also caddied there. They never let the Jewish caddys play on caddy day. |

those days standard fm fare, that is, easy listening music with the announcer coming on after every few tracks. They had a weekly bingo game and aired shows with quirky names, such as "FM in the AM" and "Music to Write Checks By." Remember, this is back in the days when the newspaper featured each station's schedule, as is done nowadays for television stations. Jim Braun, a nephew (cousin?) of Bob Braun, had a show there for some time, as well. One, or possibly both, of the Fishman brothers retired to western Florida. |

Yes -- that is my recollection. I drove by that site last weekend and was disappointed to see that it has been razed and is now just a pile of bricks and concrete.

I used to live on Stillwell in Roselawn with my folks and brother, BWags. There used to be a great place to buy 3.2 Beer-the Edgemont Pony Keg. You would drive past the JCC on Summit, turn left on Edgemont Rd, and right onto Woodland, halfway down the block on the left.
Also, this will probably be an ancient memory: How many of you remember Castle Farms?? It was located across from what was to be the JCC on Summit. Castle Farms was a dance hall, where local bands would get their start. The place was eventually razed to build some apartment buildings. Another thing I remember were the shortcuts we used to take when we didn't have cars. Like when we had to go from Stillwell down to Reading Road, to say Summit Bowl or HoJos-there were concrete steps that started next to the Shapiros on Crest Hill. Also, for those of us who lived at the north end of Stillwell, not the apartments, but the houses-we used to think we were taking our lives in our hands to come down to the bottom of Sunnybrook, and walk across the bridge to CANTERBURY GARDENS!!!!! There were HOODS that lived in there!!!! We would run as fast as we could until we reached the safety of Cherry Linder's backyard!! And who could ever forget those hot humid Cincinnati summer nights, when you could smell that creek that crossed under Stillwell just beyond Jarnicki's house and ran around behind the houses in the curve on Debonair. Another daredevil thing we used to do, (when the VERY FIRST skateboards came out in the early 60s) was to skateboard down the DonRich hill. WHAT WERE WE THINKING??? |

a couple of items to add
I think the Royals moved out in the late 60's cause my father still had his season tickets when I was driving in 1967 and 68. I remember seeing Kareem Jabbar as Lew Alcinder there with some of my fraternity brothers in 68. I guess you all know that Sigma Frisch's or Mainliner 2 is demolished and will not be rebuilt. The drug store in the valley was owned for a long time by Mr. Noiman. But Center Pharmacy had the best nectar sodas. I remember going to lunch at Roselawn pharmacy from roselawn elem. school and getting a hot dog and coke for 15 cents. The 5 and dime in avondale was owned by the Cohen's. There was also one in Roselawn at the Valley. Remember when Berconi's openned and of course Pasquale's( I later openned a pizza palor in downtown and bought my product from Pat's brother and partner Vito). I also worked at Black Angus Butcher shop after school from Woodward. Rememer when the was Pogue's and before that Rollman's. I became friends with Henry Rollman later and was in love with Lisa Pogue for a time. The teachers at Roselawn bring back memories I had Miss Amish and Mrs Russell and Sandy Jones was a favorite and a great golfer. Didn't get along with Hans though- he paddled me one day for not wearing a belt and did my parents go ballistic over that. I remember Castleton farms and going to see a concert there could have been only 9 or 10 at the time. And the new Jcc, heck how about the old Jcc on Blair. Used to buy alot of beer at Edgemont before I was 18 and also in Bond Hill at Bill and Betty's. yes they had the best popsicles in a cup. Played knothole ball and other sports at Bond Hill Park by my cousin's home on Yarmouth and of course Roselawn Park and behind Roselawn School. Anyone remember Rex Hemersly the gym teacher at Roselawn and ran the pool at the Jcc? Good friend of the family. Miss the days at Woodward, the front hall the football games at Central, the riots in 68. And now I live in Vegas and miss White Castles(frozen are not the same) and the Chilli. And I road many a BR bus with Pickles Zeff. When you are 10,11, 12 or so he was a character later he became Aqualung. |

Legend has it that the name Berconi was a takeoff on the name
of the owner, Bert Kahn. |

the set of storefronts at the northeast corner with Paddock, near the philatelic store. Al Geisel, the owner, was a German immigrant - although I don't think his business was kosher. |
