Old Bus Route Names
Wasn't the 43 bus orignally the BR (Bond Hill Roselawn) bus route; I seem to recall the bus route that is now the 45 bus was the 32 bus.. it went from Swifton to Elberon Ave.

Yes, the candy store across from Bond Hill School was known as Bee's or Breitholle's. However, later on--and this would have been when I was in sixth grade at BHS in 1963--it was run by a couple known as Tillie and Joe.
I remember how in the back of the store they sold things like cap guns. Does anyone remember something called Greenie Stick-M-Caps? I think they were caps on a roll that popped in the cap guns.
Also, I remember the wax lips at Halloween and the wax bottles with liquid in them and candy CIGARETTES! Or, the fake cigarettes with red foil at the end and powder inside which looked like smoke if you blew into the cigarettes.
There was also something called "Pig in a Poke." For a nickel (a lot of money then!), you would select a small sealed bag--I think it was white with red and blue lettering and an illustration of a pig on it. Inside was a piece of candy and a couple cheap toys.
Now, since there seem to be new members posting on here, I will repeat a question I asked some time ago. Does ANYONE remember the Rolling Doughnuts truck which came through Bond Hill on Monday and Thursday evenings? They sold warm, fresh doughnuts right off the truck. Andina was one of the streets the truck drove down. No one recalls this, but I know I did not dream this.

Bond Hill Library
The building which once housed the Bond Hill Library (on Dale Road near Reading) is for sale.

[quote=allmybengals;4073902]I had Mrs. Volkman for Kindergarten at BH, then Mrs. Brehmer for 1st grade. Mr. Warren was the Principal.
I do not recall Mrs. Brehmer, who passed away not too long ago, being a first grade teacher at Bond Hill. I had her for kindergarten in 1957-58.
The first grade teachers at that time were Faith Fisher (who, according to my brother, is still living!), Catherine Heintz (not sure of spelling), and Thyra Norcross. I just came across a very nice letter Mrs. Norcross had written to my parents at the end of my first grade year, thanking them for their support and praising my good progress and artistic ability!

Before my time...I think that Pickles Zeff died when I was still in grade school, my older friends told me that Pickles always sold Trojans to the boys in the neighborhood.
Another Pickles story. Somewhere in the 80s (maybe late 70s) I was in Las Vegas for a meeting. There was a Championship Boxing Match that I wanted to see and couldn't buy tickets. I called my Dad in Cincy and asked if any of his Newport friends could get me a ticket? He called me back and had me see someone (I forget name) at one of the Casinos (DI maybe)..The guy pointed to a picture of Pickles on the wall and asked me if I knew who he was? I told him..He said that that proved I was from Cincy and gave me a ticket to the fight
OK, time to move farther down Reading Road...
The original Perkins Restaurant (had great fried chicken) and the children's amusement park somewhere near Formica..Pee Wee Valley(?). The Glass Barn . The Wishing Well.

Hmmm...now I am wondering if the character I knew as Pickles who rode the bus was a Pickles "wannabe." This would have been in the early to mid-sixties.

Local dairies did not have exclusive territories for home delivery. They were competitive with one another but may have delivered in the same neighborhood on different days of the week. Iseem to recollect at least one family with a large number of kids who ordered from two dairies to maintain a supply on hand.

I may have been wrong as to when he died, but if you ever saw Pickles you would remember.
Thin face, long big nose (usually dripping) he usually wore a hat and a raincoat. I would have swore that the picture of him and Marilyn Monroe would be in Google images...but I can't find it.

French Bauer was the milk company they delivered in Roselawn too. We also had a donut truck come down our streets in Roselawn. The area between Kenova and Shenadoah. Those were great streets to grow up on. Lots of kids, dead end streets and everyone knew everybody and no one locked there doors until the cincinnati strangler. Does anyone remember the cow pasture which is now the shopping center on Seymore across from Woodward
