I'll be going on tier 4 ohio exteded benifits in 2 weeks which gives me 20 additional weeks of unemployment that would take me to the second week in Feruary as long as Ohio's unemployment rate is above 8.5%

However legislation approved the unemployment extension only until the week ending Decemebr 11 2010.

My question is will I be allowed to finish the tier I am on or will I lose my last 9 weeks.
Thanks for te help

I don't see any extension yet. But you should monitor this page:

I am also very interested in information on whether I can finish my 20 weeks of State Emergency Benefits in Illinois, past Dec. 11, 2010.

Also, I heard that there may be more help for 99 weekers.

thanks,

JANDJANDS

I am one of the lucky few that managed to get a job this year. I really feel for those of you who didn't.

Keep looking, some jobs are out there

Being 57 there are no jobs are out there all the hiring is for young inexperinced workers.

Older unemployed people people like myself stand no chance of getting past the interviewing process, companies will bring you in for an interview but that is all formalities. Companies are hiring a younger and cheaper workforce because they can. My wife has a job with a company that has been hiring college grads fresh out of college with 5 a year degree to work in packing and shipping of UPS and FEDEX boxes. Chemical engineers and Metalurical engineers being hired to perform tech support roles for customer service. Electrical enginner being hired in the maintence department as a common laborer.

I have a masters in science and I also have a degree in accounting that sounds like I should be able to get work I have 35 years of experience but the person that gets the job is the younger less experinced person everytime.

Mark I agree, age is a very big factor in the hiring process. Its difficult to even get an interview. I have only four more unemployment checks, I then become a 99 weeker. The thought of having no money scares me to death.

regarding older workers, NPR was doing a story about how hard it is for the older, experienced worker to get hired. one point mentioned is that there is an assumption that older folks are not very good at using the typical software used in a business office. this seems so unfair. i have seen people my age (around 30) take 4 hours to make a spreadsheet that i can do in 15 minutes and older people put something together as fast as i do. the takeaway for the older worker is to emphasize your computer abilities and if you are a bit behind, take some classes and catch up.

This may be a case of "the grass is always greener". It is very difficult to find a job if you are a recent graduate as well. Many job openings will explicitly state that they will not consider anyone with less than 10 years of experience in a very narrow field. In addition, advanced degrees are typically not worth nearly what they used to be. When jobs are available, the competition is fierce. I am involved on a search committee at the moment to fill a vacancy in our department. In just over a month, we have received over 200 applications for this one position, and about 40% of the applicants are qualified... still not very good odds.

I believe that hiring ageism mainly stems from the fact that the employee's supervisor or manager is pretty much likely to be younger, perhaps much younger than the older employee.

And it may well be the case that the manager or supervisor simply does not merit (I do mean in the sense of "deserve") that much respect from an experienced, older worker due to lack of experience, judgement and discernment.

I can certify that it completely sucks to be an older professional who is steamrollered by the immature and juvenile lack of judgement of some very young business owners and managers. Not all.

But lack of experience, especially for someone who is relatively successful at a young age, leads to extreme arrogance and blindness.
