With the Brent Spence Bridge needing emergency replacement I was wondering if there have been any conversations about re-signing I-75 and I-71 around I-275 and removing the urban freeways in the Downtown area.

A lot of other cities have recognized the folly of blasting freeways through their urban core and are now thinking about removing them.

How is I75 a folly? I used to drive it twice a month through the entire city. 275 would've doubled the length that trip took. Why remove existing, effective infrastructure? Only twice during those treks, might I add, has traffic been so bad that it slowed to below the speed limit, one being on labor day.

Simply fix it up, maybe even widen it. I75 cuts down to 2 lanes immediately after the bridge... Why not increase the capacity to direct traffic through the city rather than around? Infrastructure is economy. If there is no freeway access to downtown, downtown will likely die. See Lexington, Kentucky and its ghost-downtown.

The current plan (not sure if it's 100% confirmed, but it's really far along) is as follows:

- Keep the existing Brent Spence Bridge as I71 only
- Build a parallel bridge immediately west for I75
- Split I71/I75 in Covington right before the river

This will theoretically increase capacity, and allow the removal of the web of I75 ramps in downtown. It will add several new blocks to downtown just west of the convention center.

Which speed limit are you talking of, the posted 55 or the 65/70 everyone seems to feel entitled to go?

I was taking about ukukuk saying the only slowdown he has seen was on labor day. It's a daily grind on I-75.

Which will theoretically allow for how much of Covington to be left over?

This sounds like a good plan to me. A 2nd bridge to carry onlly I-75 traffic should surely improve the flow of through traffic on I-75 plus those crossing the river but not going to downtown. But I fail to see how it will reduce any large number of ramps. There still must be access to/from downtown and I-75 North.

Just putting signage up and declaring I-75 and I-71 no longer go through downtown is meaningless. To say cities also regret running expressways through their core is also meaningless. The continual expansion and broadening (lane increases) of the expressways through town is not due to the through traffic but the local traffic to and from the suburbs.

I also agree with the comment Lexington is a ghost-town since they wanted I-75 routed outside of town. If Rupp Arena was not downtown there would be no other reason to go there.

Here is another one - Washington Courthouse Ohio. When I-71 was built they did everything in their power to make sure it did not come close to them. Big mistake. I will also put Wilmington, Morrow and a few others on the same list. If they would have lobbied for I-71 to have been closer to the old 3C Highway route, they may have benefited from increased development.

I am not too familiar with the area, but i read on another forum they were thinking about capping the freeway that splits Downtown from The banks. Said something like maybe having a park or some low rise buildings.

I believe splitting the I-71/75 routes in Covington is a good idea. And I don't think it'll sntach up that much of Covington's real estate in the process. And, yes, I spend PLENTY of time in traffic backups in Cincinnati & NoKY. I drive a truck and come thru 4-6 times a day.
