Default Pronouncing Madeira

Do you say Ma-deer-uh or Ma-dare-uh ?

I had always heard the first but recently heard the second from a reputable source.

I laughed when I saw the title of this thread. It was an inside joke in the family how one of my aunts always insisted on calling it Muh-DEAR-ee-uh. As in, "Frankly, Muh-DEER, I don't give a damn."

Default wine?

What is the French pronunciation of the wine?
I've always called the city "muh-DEER-uh."

First of all, both the island and the wine are Portuguese, in which the pronunciation is considerably different than in English. And British English and US differ in the pronunciation. I believe Mah-deer-uh comes the closest. Most people from Madeira, the city, are friendly folk and likely no two of them pronounce it the same. Now when it comes to Mary vs Mariemont that is different.

Sources of all degrees of reputability concur, it's "Ma-Deer-uh."
"Ma-deer-uh, m'dear," quoth Mrs Goyguy Sr.
Who would dare-uh to pronounce it differently?
The only right way to sound out a place name is to follow the natives' lead: Mee-LAH-no in Milan Italy, MY-lun in Milan Indiana; and so on.

Bellefontaine (bell-fount-n -- and don't pronounce the T too clearly) is my favorite.

That's how they say it in Versailles, Indiana, too!
Kay-ro, Illinois, is one of my faves.
