I laughed when I saw the title of this thread. It was an inside joke in the family how one of my aunts always insisted on calling it Muh-DEAR-ee-uh. As in, "Frankly, Muh-DEER, I don't give a damn."

First of all, both the island and the wine are Portuguese, in which the pronunciation is considerably different than in English. And British English and US differ in the pronunciation. I believe Mah-deer-uh Mary vs Marie mont that is different.

Who would dare-uh to pronounce it differently?
The only right way to sound out a place name is to follow the natives' lead: Mee-LAH-no in Milan Italy, MY-lun in Milan Indiana; and so on.
