I sent a long statement for publication to a paper called "Senior Life" (monthly tabloid). Supposedly they published what I sent in December. However, as no copies of the December issue turned out to be convenient, it's kind of up in the air. I certainly didn't get any money from them.

Does anyone know of anyone who has a copy of the December issue?

I'm not a pest control professional or anything similar. I'm just an old woman astonished over what went on at my former apartment house.

The owner got rid of pest control services and set maintenance to handling things (one would assume everything was under control every which way). I came to find out there were bed bugs and they were in my couch by accident -- due to the knowledge of a friend from Hamilton county.

Something about the whole business was not quite right, and when I finally got a "procedural statement," something about that didn't look right either. On suspicion I a ran a search online on some key words and found that the landlord had copied a PDF file posted by a pest control company in OREGON (near Portland).

And, did they consult by telephone or maybe fly in from Oregon for special treatment? Seemed mighty unlikely.

The first of December I was standing on a street corner (in a cold rain) looking for a cab to go to a motel until another apartment could arranged. Spent several days in the motel. And, I'm not the only one that was run out.

Glad you posted the reason for your interest in this subject. Sounds like you experienced the problem first hand. From what I have read this is enough to make you wake up at night fearful of the critters being around.

Actually I could have worded that a little better. I had been in the place about four years and no problems. I didn't know there were such things AND I didn't know the place had them. When I started getting bitten, I thought it was just skin rash -- I'm susceptible to rashes and thought little of it.

The friend had experience as a family member had moved into a place in Cincinnati that had them and they got hit with a bad infestation. She only came over about once a month and the bugs had a good hold on the couch by the time I checked. And, no, the friend didn't bring them. I eventually found out they were in apartments above, below, and beside me.

When I went to the apartment building office I got handed a spray bottle with an inch of an alcohol and water mixture and a statement that a representative from the state said to spray with alcohol and water. That night the ones that came out got an antiseptic bath. The ones that came out the next night got straight alcohol, but being unsure from the night before, I started scraping them up with tissues and throwing them into jars. I've got pictures.

What really got me was that dealing with the landlord got me instructions of what _I_ was supposed to do put out by a pest control company in Oregon. They were his bugs. And, the management probably did not expect anyone would be able to find the source of the instructions nor did they intend to discuss things. No lease renewal.

I'm still looking for a copy of that publication noted in the first message on this page.

Supposedly one place they're found is Kroger's.

Yes, they have a website showing their newspaper, and it's not maintained well enough for me to get a connection to the pages of the paper itself.

The Papers Incorporated | Publications | Senior Life (http://www.the-papers.com/pub/sl/index_sl.html - broken link)

Default Regular -- Annual -- Inspections

My apartment building (in Covington, over 150 units) had it's annual bed bug inspection last week. My floor got it on Thursday, 2/25/11. This is a building-wide inspection. They go into each apartment, examine likely places, then make arrangements to run a treatment through the unit if they find bugs or signs of bugs.

This is not the same as an individual inspection. If someone spots bugs, for example, they are supposed to report it to the office, then that one area gets a going over. Presently a treatment doesn't cost the tenants anything; but, if there is a need to do something like haul out a couch, the managment will do it with payment of a fee.

To the best of my knowledge the inspections are being scheduled annually here as the situation is deemed "under control." (I'm not really sure about all that. If someone brought in some and they somehow got spread around, there might be a special building-wide inspection or maybe semi-annually.)

Anyway, they do things like turn over the furniture, examine the bottom side of mattresses, etc. Normally all they do with an inspection is look, and they don't just glance around.

This is something that is probably going to have to be done everywhere. There are probably a lot of places that don't do it; but, I just wanted to mention there is at least one place that does do it.

(And, no they didn't find any in my apartment.)

i think we'll inevitably see most multi-unit apartment buildings begin semi-annual or annual inspections. we're getting to where there is a reluctance to move into apartment buildings because of the perception of the BB's, so property managers will need to do everything they can to keep tenants in the building.
