Can anyone suggest some ideas for a fun evening out in Cincinnati?

We're a young professonal couple, late 20s, African American from Columbus. Just looking to make a quick weekend trip for a change of scenery... My girlfriend suggested spending the weekend in Cincinnati since we're so close.

I'm not too familiar with the city, I've been there once or twice, but just passing through without really seeing or doing anything. She's been to Cincy a lot and seems to have really enjoyed it.

Looking for something near downtown where we'll be staying... live music or upscale bars are always good, anything cultural or interesting to see. We're pretty open minded with entertainment, just needs to be in a safe area of town and not ridiculously expensive.

Any help would be very appreciated!

If you're staying downtown, you should check out the Velvet Room on 4th Street, Mr. Pitifuls on Main Street and definitely walk around Fountain Square.

The Blue Wisp downtown for jazz...upscale bars/restaurants around 6th & Walnut (surrounding the Aronoff Center)...for something "out of the ordinary," West African DJ night at Phat Daddy's in Roselawn (~15 minutes' drive from downtown) preceded by dinner at the nearby beloved Song Long Vietnamese restaurant and/or some "java" at the Gospel Coffee Shop...Jean-Ro Bistro at 713 Vine St, the #1 place to be seen at lunchtime now...Lavomatic and Senate, two trendy spots close by each other in the "Gateway Quarter" on Vine just north of Central Parkway...for a memorable gustatory and cultural experience, Scotti's Italian restaurant (919 Vine)...Newport on the Levee shopping/dining "destination" just over the bridge in Kentucky, with an aquarium next door...

Cincinnati's an excellent city for museumgoers. Downtown, you can visit the Taft (art) Museum, the Contemporary Arts Center, and even the Fire Museum on West Court St. The Cincinnati Art Museum is close by in beautiful Eden Park. And right up the road in the Union Terminal train station building is "our" Museum Center, which houses the Natural History Museum and the Cincinnati Historical Society as well as an iMax movie theater. You may still be able to catch Tavis Smiley's "America I Am" exhibit there. Also situated downtown, on "prime real estate" right at the river, is the Underground Railroad Freedom Center.

BTW unless you've picked out a hotel and/or definitely want to be downtown, my personal favorite place to lay my head in Cincy (besides my family home lol) is the Parker House B & B near UC. The inn consists of all of three guest rooms in a big old house with sky-high ceilings - covered with hand-painted murals - and the owners are a trip in themselves. Better still, the rates are shockingly good and are without any added taxes. You can park off the street for free and walk to the numerous eating places in the neighborhood, with Clifton's "gaslight" section (full of funky shops and "ethnic" and other restaurants, as well as an independent movie theater) a short drive to the north and downtown a hop skip and jump south.
