I recommend Pleasant Ridge. I have friends who live there and they love it plus it is one of the more diverse communities in Cincinnati. The business district along Montgomery Road has a lot of great shops and restaurants and as far as rentals, on thing that I find in the older neighborhoods are two family homes for rent. On the outside they look like a normal home but they are split in half. Plus, a lot of these two family homes have a lot more character than your typical apartment. With Pleasant Ridge, you are still close to downtown and close to Kenwood Mall.
