Hello,

Iím a student at Xavier University. I am currently working on a project in which my group and I have to detail the West Side of Cincinnati. (Itís for the class Urban America.) To get a really wide range of perspectives on it, I figured I could ask people here what they think about the West Side. If youíre willing to help out, there are some questions below to answer. You donít have to respond to them all: anything would be of assistance.

Also, weíre trying to get a wide variety of demographics, so it would be helpful if you were willing to provide your age and ethnicity.

1. Where did you grow up on the west side? How has it changed in that time?

1a. Or did you move there later in your life? If so, why?

2. What is your particular neighborhood like?

3. What is your favorite part of the west side?

4. Do you believe the west side has a certain culture to it? How so...?

5. What do you dislike most about the west side? How could it be improved?

6. Which side of Cincinnati is better and why?

7. Are people on the west side stereotyped in any way? How so...?

8. Is there anything else youíd like to add?

Thank you very much! Iím looking forward to seeing how you all respond.

I live on the west side. Experience has taught me to go to the east side for medical treatment. I also had to go there to find a church I liked.

Interesting. What was it about West Side churches that made them unappealing to you? Was it a matter of denomination, building/community quality, or something else?

The churches in my Protestant denomination were all smaller than I wanted, which might be partly due to the fact that a lot of the population on the west side is Roman Catholic. This is not to say that I don't think smaller churches have qualities to recommend them. Just not my personal preference.

Most of the churches on the west side take coupons. And, if you have an injury from that game that should be called "corn bag toss" instead of the filthy euphemism by which it is known, there are three medical specialists treating those injuries on the west side. Like most west side physicians though, they are osteopathic practitioners. (DO as opposed to MD for those who attended school on the west side).

1. Where did you grow up on the west side? How has it changed in that time?
N/a
1a. Or did you move there later in your life? If so, why?
I moved to Price Hill when I got married in my mid twenties. My grandmother owned a small rental house on Omena Place and was looking to sell it; so we took her up on it.
I currently live in Bridgetown - I have lived here for about 30 years.

2. What is your particular neighborhood like? Neighborhood of small single family houses. When my wife and I first moved here, we were one of the youngsters - now we are the old folks - the neighborhood seems to be renewing itself.

3. What is your favorite part of the west side?
Probably the lack of pretence of the people.

4. Do you believe the west side has a certain culture to it? How so...?
I have lived here so long, it's hard to tell - but probably more parochial in their orientation.

5. What do you dislike most about the west side? The slow decline in the quality of life due primarily to the dumping of lower income (read section 8) people. How could it be improved? Not sure it can be.

6. Which side of Cincinnati is better and why?
Both sides have their advantages. West side is more neighborly the East side is more sophistacated and more successful from a career standpoint.

Feel free to contact me directly if I can be of more assistance in your project.
7. Are people on the west side stereotyped in any way? How so...?

8. Is there anything else youíd like to add?

1. Where did you grow up on the west side? How has it changed in that time?

NA

1a. Or did you move there later in your life? If so, why?

I moved to it from Los Angeles, CA and didn't want a snobby community.

2. What is your particular neighborhood like?

I live in Monfort Heights, its alright I guess, but seems to be going downhill... They are trying to turn things around by adding new things along North Bend Road, I guess they stopped centering ALL attention on the Harrison Pike area. I live in a newer subdivision near St Ignatius. I like it here even though I have said otherwise in the past.

3. What is your favorite part of the west side?

My favorite PARTS are both East Price Hill, and Green/Miami Twp.

4. Do you believe the west side has a certain culture to it? How so...?

Of course who doesn't? MASS festivals, grilling, cornhole, etc! Nuff said!

5. What do you dislike most about the west side? How could it be improved?

I dislike how the city has neglected the Westside in terms of quality of life... To be honest, I don't think they give a rats ass about anyone over here and are focussed on the already nice Eastside (for the most part). Other than that I love the simple, community feel, not overwhelming, suburban feel that Green and Miami Townships have. They managed to make it still feel middle class, not overdoing it like WestChester, not too snobby like Anderson.

6. Which side of Cincinnati is better and why?

If I had to be honest, the East. It has the nice communities, townships, and riches you wouldn't find over on the West and has things going for it in terms of development.

7. Are people on the west side stereotyped in any way? How so...?

HELL YES. This is a big YES. Black people are segregated between pretty much Colerain and Winton Road. This also applies to areas East of Boudinot. If its easy to point out the good from the bad, its a good guess segregation is happening.

8. Is there anything else you’d like to add?

Nah

Its caught on quite a ways outside of the region. In Chicago they don't call it what Cincinnatians do, they call it bags which I think might be more to your liking

Wilson... If someone experiences injury playing bags, they must really be out of shape or really drunk to begin with. I can see a drunk person tripping over the platform and causing any number of physical injuries. But other than that what physical injuries are common - is it like tennis elbow?
